I can see some similarities in the two, but Cotto would need to put together a streak of big wins and continue to improve before he can be compared to Chavez. Chavez was such a great fighter and was more skilled all-around.

And all this coming from the guy who loves the term "Floyd boys"... Very, extremely bias for Cotto, this thread topic is.

Do you mean that making a thead about a fighter is biased?

Saying Cotto is a better all round fighter than Julio Caesar Chavez is!

He classes me as a Floyd boy, but I don't reckon none of my replies or threads about Floyd stoop that low.

COMPARE the two. Don't say "who is the better all round fighter"
    ;)

I still don't get it. How is making a thread about someone being biased?

How does Ray Leonard's resume stack up against Ray Robinson's? Oh no. Am I being biased? But against whom? Ray, or Ray?

Mike Tyson hits harder than Michael Dokes. Am I being biased?

I think the op has confused athleticism with fighterism, as I previously posted. That does not mean I think the op is biased for asking a question.

I think you may have mis-read my intention/read too much into it. Its simply semi an attack on Relentless as his favourite word is "Floyd boys"... when he is clearly a bigger "Cotto boy" than any of the Floyd boys around here (based only on my observations).

I mean, doesn't comparing Cotto to Chavez prove the above?

    :D

It's hard for me to believe anyone out there really believes Cotto is better. He's a damn fine fighter, but in Chavez we're talking ATG. He's just on another level.

I think Chavez holds the edge in inside fighting, speed, head movement, defense, faster overall combinations, shorter shots, intelligence, and counter punching. Chavez was more methodical and busier. I wouldn't consider this a factor of overall talent, but Chavez had a better chin.

Cotto is similar to Chavez, but they are different fighters. Cotto is very intelligent too, but it not the inside fighter Chavez was. Cotto is a great body puncher, but probably a little below the level of Chavez. The things Cotto has the edge on is physical strength, punching power, and I think his jab is better. Cotto is methodical, but when he is pressuring, I don't think he is quite as technical. He doesn't move his head as much and seems to be more of a bull.

Those who side with Cotto may bring up his versatility, and by all means, he is very versatile. But people forget that Chavez wasn't some plodding, one-dimensional pressure fighter like Baldomir. He could box and brawl too.
Time will tell whether or not he is actually superior, but as it stands now, I have no problem going with JCC.

If they fought at 140, I would pick Chavez by KO. If they fought at 147, I'd go with Cotto.

Great breakdown. The 147 lb Chavez is clearly not an ideal Chavez, and a fight at this weight would leave him open for a loss to the current version of Cotto (which is an extremely strong fighter). Of course there is no question who is the better fighter. "Floyd or Chavez" is a much more interesting question at this point.
