Excellent fight, Arguello was the real deal a true ATG but in this fight Chavez was a busier fighter on the inside and cuts off the ring too well. Normally Arguello keeps the fight at range but at close quarters where Chavez would keep it JCC is too good and rugged to be KO'd.

Tough fight, close call. But I have to go with Arguello,he had great power on his shots at this weight. And a very underrated body attack as well. It would not be one-sided on the inside. And once Arguello established proper punching distance from the outside, you had problems. JCC ,while having great whiskers. would have trouble dealing with Arguello`s sharp jab and punishing right cross. Arguello 12rd Ud, in a rugged, grueling fight...

Arguello was known as a high quality body puncher in his day. I think his frame makes people think of him as a rangy finesse fighter. I think he would hold up quite well with the pressure Chavez would apply....heck a faded Arguello stood up fairly well under the intense pressure (although very different in style) of a prime Pryor. I struggle with picking a winner...I am currently leaning towards Arguello 8-7....not sure which way I would go in a 12 rounder....I wouldn't wager a dime on this fight, but would certainly pay to watch this.

I'd go with Arguello who was a definite class above Julio. Aguello leads comfortably on pts especially after 15

Chavez for me. That iron chin that allowed him to take flush right hands from a noted bomber like Rosario without blinking would stand him in good stead here. Arguello is a great technician with plenty of juice in either hand, but I don't think he's slick enough to outbox Julio and in fact I think he'd have enough confidence in his own ability to tackle Chavez dead on, which to me is a mistake.
To beat Chavez I think you needed to be a slick fighter like Whitaker or a naturally bigger man like Oscar, who was also excellent in all aspects of the game.

Arguello is great and one of my faves, but I think once Chavez (and I do think it is inevitable) gets that momentum going, he is extremely difficult to deter. I see him stifling Alexis in close, all the while banging away relentlessly to the body and head with that deadly left hand inside, where Alexis would struggle to get leverage on his shots.

Arguello does not move well enough to keep Chavez off him and I think Chavez' chin can take those big right hands that Arguello would throw.

Pin point accuracy, better movement, faster hands, better defense, and being a busier fighter at this weight leads to a Chavez victory. Remember that at this weight, Chavez moved. and defended well on the inside and had good bounce in his legs.. Rosario fight for the pace and inside fighting defense and the Ramirez fight for outside movement if examples are needed

Great matchup! Arguello may not be able to out busy Chavez in the later rounds I see Alexis out pointing him by keeping the distance and doin what he did best.

I say Arguello by late KO or wins a 15 round decision

I don't see how Arguello keeps Chavez off him for 15. Or even 12. Once its established that Arguello can outbox Chavez at Arguello's pace, Chaves switches gears and turns up the pressure. If Chavez can walk through Rosario's bombs, he can walk through Arguello's.

Chavez either wins a decision or stops him, but late.

How do we even remotely know that Chavez would operate better 13-15 than Arguello? :think:huh

good points Dave K... Don`t you think that Arguello had better pin point power shots though ? Better than Rosario ? Plus I think El Flaco went to the body much better than Rosario. Hey either way it`s a great fight and one we all wish we could have seen !

Arguello operated fine in those late rounds.

I just think Chavez can't outbox Arguello and I dont think Arguello can deal with that kind of pressure for that long.

I don't think Arguello's superiority in punch accuracy over Rosario is in question. I'm not questioning anything about Alexis other than his ability to not only fend off, but fight through and win rounds over the kind of pressure Chavez brings.

I'm not even totally married to the idea of Chavez winning here. I favor Chavez but its foolish to discount him in this one.
