Bollocks! Even if you believe that to be true, what's your point? I'm sure if you asked Duran if he walked through all his own opponents he'd tell you of fellas you've never even heard of that were tough fights for him. Whitaker and Floyd, has every fight they had been a walkover for them?
Duran wasn't consistent, sure he could, but we don't know what shape Duran would come in, so he might lose 1 or 2 Does Whitaker have the longetivity to do the same? Mayweather might be the likeliest to do it, he's always fit and in shape and still seems to be in good shape. But fighting 5 times a year, even against ok men is very difficult. Old timers did it, but they fought men who also fought 5 times per year so it evens out. And they didn't go 87-0 and if they had comparable records they're probably on the ATG list around place 10.
Mayweather fought many times in a year in his earlier days. Mayweather is also much more disciplined than Chavez ever was. After Chavez's first big victory against Edwin Rosario, he started drinking alcohol. Mayweather has never done this. Chavez still had amazing longevity despite drinking and the drug problems. He has really great wins against: Roger Mayweather (X2), Edwin Rosario, Meldrick Taylor, Jose Luis Ramirez, and Hector Camacho. I think he has a couple of other quality victories. Record is pretty padded though, but I would do the exact same thing too to make more money.
Hahahaha this made me laugh. I think that it was 100% fair that Chavez beat Taylor because he actually did beat Taylor. If you simply analyze who had more damage at the end of the fight you can see who really won, despite the judges scorecards. The Whitaker fight was a bad decision from the judges.
True story... But then again.. that needs to be factored in.. true it wasn't his fault but he still fight any ATG in their prime really.. and the one he did fight.. outclassed him
Difficult question initially I was gonna say great because he fought everyone although the only ATG was Whitaker. However how many guys who fought in the last 30 years have an amazing resume, possibly just Ray Leonard & maybe Duran can't think of any others. Charles, Greb and Langford did it a long time ago, its near impossible to match there resumes in recent times.
It's mighty impressive, speedsters, punchers, technicians all in a very very good era They'd beat the breaks off a few HOFamers in their weight classes
Who do you have in mind that they would beat? Not trying to argue and i can't remember every fighter from their weightclasses in the HOF, just curious.
It's excellent. It's padded in spots, but fantastic in others. He got some gifts later on, but I think his legacy as an ATG is established by then. I can't count the should-have been losses against Pea and Randall against him too much, because he didn't need those wins to be great. It's a stellar CV.
A clear win over the premiere pure boxer in his era would have helped, but both were past their best. It'd bump him, but not a whole lot. It'd more banish the argument that Chavez struggles with elite defensive wizards(He did), which would make him, on the whole, seem like even more of a juggernaught. I rank him and Pea pretty close, it might have pushed him out of that tier. Everybody knows that the sheen came off the undefeated record that night, but Chavez had already been proven mortal and was simply pushing to excel after a stellar career at that point.
Well Gatti for a start. I think Gans if in the modern era would struggle with the likes of Taylor and Mayweather. I don't rate Mclarnin that highly, he looks quite basic and beatable. I think Taylor would outspeed and outwork allot of pure boxers, maybe he'd beat Ross, maybe not but I'd at least even odds
