    Chavez was a great fighter.
I didn't mind him exhibiting his skills against journeymen in non-title fights, keeping active. Nothing wrong with that, because in his prime he was beating 1 or 2 good or very good opponents every year too.

And some of those guys, like Edwin Rosario, were excellent near-great fighters, and Chavez absolutely thrashed them.

He fought a lot because he was signed to the shadiest promoters in history, King 1st, Arum 2nd, and was ****ing broke from partying and drugs. He had a name and that was better than a credit card .

Facts can only be 100%, anything less and they're not facts. And also you're mistaking opinion for fact. Basically, an interesting read but simply your opinion...

Why thank you. Did you take a break from teaching at MIT to school me in the art of the written word?
Fat Dan scribbles worthless lies for a living and they are peddled around here as facts.

You act like Chavez was destined for greatness since his first fight. Since when does anyone protect a guy with no amateur career? LOL
Dude fought because his family needed money. Him fighting bums, as you call them, was his amateur career. He should actually be praised that he became champ after 33 amateur fights. Right?

He fought good opponents just as often as anyone does these days. He just happens to have had sanctioned sparring sessions in between.

Chavez was a great champion but a shade below guys like Whitaker, ODLH, Mayweather etc in terms of ability

Chavez' skills are severely underrated. He had it all.

Meldrick Taylor situation can be viewed both ways, at that point the only reason the fight should be allowed to go on is because of the time and that Meldrick would go on to win, at any other point in time it would be a stoppage or if Chavez was up on the scorecards. I mean the question is does the referee take into account the time of the stoppage or should he just go by what he sees at the time no matter the time.

Taylor looked bad but with just seconds until the end... the ref really does not know what time it is and does not pay attention at all. His focus has to be on the fighters at all times. I don't think it was intentional, but Taylor was looking bad.

He beat up on overmatched opposition quite often but there's a whole lot of good wins cushioned in-between.

In the Taylor fight people tend to focus too much on the ref's conduct.

Look at it from Chavez's point of view.

Down on the cards and needing a knockout to win Chavez somehow managed to find a way to drop Taylor in the dying seconds of the fight.

    That's the stuff of legend.

What's more, even if he was losing on points, Chavez gave Taylor such a beating over twelve rounds that the poor guy was never the same again.

Richard Steele may or may not have been out of order, but you can't take anything away from Chavez.
