Not VERY entertaining... but it WAS close and you'll get many votes, posts and opinions. :good Think about it... or I'll do it first! :hey PS: You mean you haven't watched it? :yikes
No, only 18...Only became a big boxing fan a year ago. You can start a thread bout it if u want, ill watch it later and judge. But, I like exciting fights. Judging boring fights is boring even if it is 2 legends facing each other.
I had it 7-3-1 Taylor. Rounds 1, 3-8 for Taylor. Rounds 2, 9, 11 for Chavez. Round 10 (a great round) even.
Same here. For starters, he screamed at Taylor before the round started "Go knock him out!" atsch, even though he denies it now. But more importantly, the fool jumped on the ring apron when Taylor was floored and began screaming instructions to him, distracting him when he was supposed to be focused on answering Richard Steele's questions. What the hell was he doing?? atsch
As I said, the controversy was deserved, but it could be justified. In that I mean I think Taylor deserved to go on given the circumstances, but I understand Steele's reasoning behind stopping the fight. All things considered I think that fight encompassed a lot of what makes boxing so dramatical.
You're correct. Duva clearly stated in the corner that Taylor needed the last round to win and instructed him to go all out, which was absurd and turned out to be the big mistake it looked like it could be at the time. Afterwards he denied saying any of that because he knew it was his fault for being such an inept trainer.
do people see the similarities between this and Bute vs Andrade? another question: how much time was on the clock when Taylor hit the canvas?
The situation in this fight was basically the same, with the referee making the exact opposite decision. When Taylor went down I recall there being something like 15 seconds on the clock, but by the the time the count was picked up, finished, and the ref had called off the fight there were something like 3 seconds left.
well i just rewatched it and there are 2 major differences. The first one is that Bute goes down with less than 10 seconds to go. The second one is that Taylor was not being dominated as much as Bute was in that round, until the knockdown. overall though, very similar. its a judgement call by the ref. Either way, people will complain. Imagine if the ref in Chavez vs Taylor was Mexican, the kind of controversy and calls of corruption it would have led to.
I'm trying to re-watch the ending right now but unfortunately I'll have to watch some of the fight before the vid fully loads, which will subject me to hearing HBO's ridiculously biased commentating. "Chavez on the verge of going down!"atsch
http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=3136887 fast forward to the 3 minute mark damn look at the body shot that Chavez lands with his left with 22 seconds left to the round!
To this very day, I am still trying to figure out why Duva told Taylor that "You need to win this last round, Champ!" Seriously, did they not see Taylor landing his lightning fast flurries at will? He won most of the rounds, he never, ever should have been allowed to trade with Chavez in that final round. That being said, I do agree with the stoppage. Taylor did not answer. Inn the post fight interview, Taylor said Steele never asked him if he was ok, which to me was proof enough that the fight should have been stopped, because Steele had asked him loudly twice "You OK?!" "You OK?!" Also, Duva climbed onto the ring apron which would have merited an automatic DQ. Great, great fight though.
