Incredible fight where the styles and personalities collided in a major way. The stoppage is as the referee had called it and it's obviously legit. However, I think the Richard Steele should have known better. He had seen the red light on top of the corner post signifying how close the end of the round was. That red light was directly behind Meldrick Taylor and was visible to Steele, yet he ignored the timing of the situation and made a call that I wouldn't have. 2 seconds. Once again though, that was Steele's call and not mine.
First off It was 5 seconds not 2. Secondly, it only took Shane Mosley 2 seconds to nearly decapitate Mayorga after the 8 count. Third, what IF JCC would have landed one more punch and sent Taylor to the MORGUE INSTEAD of the HOSPITAL.
Three points. 1: I wanted to kill Steele for stopping the fight when he did it. Taylor deserved to win based on his performance for most of the rounds. Too bad he had an autistic trainer. 2: The fight ends after 12 rounds. Steele was following protocol. As much as it pissed me off, it was a good stoppage. 3: The man that cost Taylor the biggest win of his career was Duva. He should have told him to dance around in the last round. And he shouldn't distract his fighter when it mattered the most. Most people blame Steele, but I blame Duva. Ultimately, it was a shame for Taylor the way it played out, but credit to Chavez for pursuing the KO until the last second, and to Steele for doing his job.
maybe the greatest ref's performance of all time. legit stoppage, taylor was gone and people can not accept it cause it was so late in the fight. honestly if the fight went on there is maybe a 90% chance taylor would have won but there was like a 10% chance that JCC would have got one more free hit on a dazed taylor and ruined him even worse. people who wanted taylor to have had that 90% chance "cause he deserved it" are not being fair.
I can't ever agree to put the blame on Duva....based on the fact that by the time the 12th round came Taylor could hardly stand on his own two feet, let alone box circles around Chavez...Hell, through out the fight he wasn't really boxing circles, he was just landing quicker. By the time the 12th came around, Taylor could barely see with his eye almost swollen shut, his mouth was busted up, and his organs had been rearranged, he had no legs. Chavez won by TKO because he destroyed Taylor, and it had nothing to do with Taylor's corner instructions.
Fair points. Duva should have instructed his fighter to stay the **** away in the last round, though. My point was that It's not like he couldn't get away, Taylor CHOSE to stay in there and bang with Chavez even in the 12th, and his corner never told him otherwise.
Taylor had the 2nd best win of his career a year after Chavez I, in beating Aaron Davis. The win over Glenwood Brown was good in the sense that Taylor rallied from two KDs to beat a solid contender who was a bigger man. Taylor wasn't quite the same post-Chavez, but still a quality fighter for a little while longer. Just another case of HBO's Legendary Myths polluting the minds of boxing fans with their exaggerations.
taylor was a spent bullet who got beat up.....if this thing was a 15 rd fight taylor woyld have been hurt big time
:deal I think the ref did well in protecting the fighter's safety then keeping time. Even if Taylor was winning, he was paying a heavy price for it and acouple more punches from JCC who knows what would of been the consequences of that.
Taylor was showboating in the last round. Hardly the behavior of a man who could barely stand. He was obviously hurting, but he wasn't incapable.
Schooled Chavez??? Look at his face at the end of the fight. He was ever the same again after this fight. Chavez destroyed him. The name of the fight was perfect (Lightning meet thunder) JCC landed fewer not so spectacular shots but with a lot a lot more power behind them
