This fight came to my mind today. We have Cuevas who was a brute; he'd come at you relentlessly, digging punishing body shots in, and ripping with the left hooks upstairs. He was rather crude and one dimensional, however. And as his stint as welterweight champion, relied on his chin to absorb punishment. He didn't totally neglect defense, but nobody would confuse him with a slickster. By the time Hearns got to him, he had taken too many shots and had defended his title 10+ times I believe (although prime for prime it wouldn't have made a difference). Then there's Chavez at 147. Certainly not as effective as he was at 130, 135, and 140. He was small for the weight class, but despite that fact, he still held a considerable amount of technical superiority over Cuevas. Better versatility, more boxing skills, and a more technical infighter. His chin was something else too, having taken shot after shot from Meldrick Taylor, big punches from Edwin Rosario, Jose Luis Ramirez, and countless others. But with that in mind, he'd be going against one of the 2, 3, or 4 hardest punching welterweights in boxing history. Would Chavez be able to get Cuevas's respect, avoid most of his big shots, outclass him, and do a considerable amount of damage to Cuevas's body inside for the stretch run? Or is he simply overmatched here? Discuss.
I will take Chavez by k/o. From couple of fights I have seen of Cuevas he took too many clean punches to make it past JCC imo
i agree. i hate chavez but respect him as a fighter. cuevas was bullied by duran. yes, that was later in his career but it gives you an idea of what chavez could do. cuevas was a fearsome puncher but useless on the backfoot (ie: hearns fight). chavez kept you on the backfoot all night long
I'm going to demurr here and pick Cuevas. I think he's just too big and strong -- Chavez does not have the boxing ability to be as effective as Duran was and is stretched too thin at 147. Duran dropped right-hand counters over Cuevas jab repeatedly -- I don't see Chavez doing that. I see Chavez coming at Cuevas head-on, and Cuevas hit harder. I don't want to go as far as a stoppage, but I see Cuevas forcing Chavez backwards.
the duran comparison? maybe but either way, i see chavez walking cuevas down. he didn't have the technical skills, defense, chin or conditioning to last with even the 147 pound version. his only hope would be to knock chavez out, which he wouldn't
Why not? Chavez was smaller, not at his best at 147, and not nearly as good as Duran at that weight. He'd be there to be hit all night long. I can't easily pick a Cuevas stoppage either, because Chavez is the better fighter and pressure dide seem to deter Cuevas, but Cuevas's size and power makes me lean towards him in this matchup. Depends on how he respects the smaller Chavez.
Hmmm, good point with respect. if Cuevas lets himself be backed up he has no chance. If he imposes himself, he could make a real fight of it. I just think in a relative test of wills and toughness, chavez takes it but cuevas wouldn't be a pushover
seriously dude, sweet pea gave chavez a clinic. he treated it like a sparring session, treating a legend like a punk and outboxing him the entire fight
Just try to realize Chavez was at his best from 130-140 and only once fought at 147(where he got schooled). Cuevas was one of the hardest hitting WW's of all time.
