Where does he rank on your ATG list? What's his best attribute and weakness if any? Also what are some of his best formances/fights? His prime was a little before me so I'm just wondering what your thoughts are on him. And also if there's anywhere I can see some of his fights besides youtube. Thanks
A top 20 All Time Great. A very good all around fighter with killer body work. Highly underrated by many in ESB as well. Some of his best fights are against Rosario, Taylor, Mayweather, Haugen, Ramirez, Camacho, and others.
#28 currently, but my lists fluctuate often. I don't think he deserves to be rated higher than that at the moment, though possibly lower. And yes, I know this is the General Forum, therefore this point of view will be criticised.
...............The best Mexico has ever produced. Can't stand him as a personality, he's a little ***** in defeat, but a great, great fighter.
Chavez did everything that he possibly could with his career....his record is basically a "who's who" of boxing from 1985-1995....possibly a bit underrated. Some people say that he's overrated, but You know that the guy was great when people on this forum tend to be reluctant to pick against him in mythical matchups against the greatest fighters of all time. Chavez was very destructive in his prime....not many fighters wanted, or needed, rematches against him....easily the best Mexican fighter ever IMO....possibly the best ever at 130 and at 140....and he gets a lot of credit at 135 too even though he didn't spend much time there.
TOUGHEST SUN OF A GAWN ALIVE!!! No, I ain't exactly his fan but he has got to be up there with Evander Holyfield as the toughest ******* alive. Just come forward relentlessly and destroy your body, till you crap yourself. No one outlasts him, no one out toughs him. Wasn't fastest, didn't have the best footwork, didn't have one punch power, didn't throw unexpected shots, but for what he was A WORKMAN, no one did it better. Also gave 100% into every fight and never decided to skip training like Duran for example. So about as consistent as a fighter ever got. Obviously an ATG don't really care where, and yes he did lose to Whitaker. And always would have. Andrey
Great methodical pressure fighter. He had an effective defense as he slipped and rolled with shots well. When he did take them flush, he had a great chin. His combos were beautiful, very fluid and he made it look easy. He was an accurate puncher and knew when and where to throw his shots. I thought his footwork was one of his best attributes. He was excellent at cutting off the ring.
besides tyson, he was the only fighter i can remember who people would bet on what round he would win in, instead of if he would win.
True, he was very smart in that regard, not just with footwork, but with the way he'd box a fighter in with his punches, or catch a fighter trying to escape a corner. If you tried to escape from the right side, the straight right would be waiting, if you tried to escape from the left side, the left hook(likely to the body) was waiting. He was very accurate with these punches as well. In many ways the quintessential pressure fighter.
It was excellent but what I meant was more of that he wasn't as light on his feet and fast. He was very balanced and sturdy on his feet, but he was no Ali or Leonard. Andrey
Chavez was a master at picking his spots well and knowing when to hit an opponent which is why Meldrick's face looked the way it after their fight.
