The greatest Mexican fighter ever? How does his incredible undefeated steak of 89-0 hold up to modern scrutiny? Was it padded with 'tune up 'fights or does it still prove his dominance? For me, he's right up there with the greatest. His record had it's share of 'taxi drivers ', but to go so long unbeaten and remain a champ, great achievement.
Depends on how you rank single wins compared to consistent domination imo. Also how much you penalise fighters for losses. Personally, I think highly of big single wins and don't massively detract for losses (unless they're really bad), especially in lower weight divisions which are shark tanks in terms of talent compared to heavyweight etc. Given this, I would personally rank Olivares and Saldivar in the top 2 spots. Chavez is always top 3 though no matter the criteria which shows how great he is.
I dont consider Chavez Mexico's best ever. I think Sanchez was better, and I believe Sanchez would have gone down as greater had he lived. Chavez is the greatest Mexican fighter though. My Mexico top 5 (in greatest) is: 1. Chavez 2. Olivares 3. Sanchez 4. Saldivar 5. Canto Marquez and Canelo are among the most overrated fighters of all time IMO. Neither makes my top 5, though both are in the top 10.
I think he was likely Mexico’s best which says a lot given how many excellent greats have come from that country. I watched most of his career growing up and felt he was p4p best in his era until the Whitaker fight. His 89-0 record was nothing short of magnificent and I feel he his unduly criticized for record padding. How many champions fight two or three top challengers in a single year AND manage to squeeze in a few club fighters with undefeated records in between ? It was one of boxing’s best achievements.
Definitely. He's one of the greatest fighter s imo. He was breaking down guys like no one's business.. To get to where he did with that record. Amazing.
I wouldn't be surprised. He was a Tyson like character back in the day, no one was coming close to beating him.
