I've been underrating Vazquez, the fact that he holds a win over aaron davis is impressive.

Vazquez was a very, very good fighter. Were he from the blessed USA he would have had the ability to have become a great.

I'm imagining this was another example among many of Davis' great, great chin.

He was a pretty decent titlist, no bum. Was in some good action fights too. His loss to Whitaker in his one and only "megafight" seems to overshadow the rest of his career a bit, but he had a pretty decent title reign with some decent wins, before and afterward. Of course, he was the first guy ever to beat Winky Wright, and the only fighter ever to drop him thus far. That fight is an all time classic BTW, for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

Sadly, I heard that Vasquez came back to the ring a couple years ago and is currently getting KO'd in 1 by nobodies, a far cry from the toughness and resilience he showed back in his heyday.

It was an example of great chins from both fighters. This was one of the most brutal fights I've ever seen.

Most rounds followed a similar pattern: Davis getting off to a better start with his quicker hands, Vasquez then rallying late with his workrate and brute force bludgeoning. Just about every single round was closely contested and though Davis probably landed the cleaner punches, Vasquez was doing a lot of heavy clubbing and his better stamina just about got him over the line.

I had the fight scored 116-115 for Vasquez, but really, a draw would have been a better verdict. No one deserved to lose this one. Fights like this one shouldn't have a loser.

Vasquez has been in a lot of good fights. He has that poor man's Gene Fullmer style (with a totally inferior jab of course) that just about guarantees a rough and tumble fight. For those that haven't seen his fights with Dottuev and Castillejo I recommend them as well.

yeah it says something that he's still only person to drop winky and almost stopped him in the last round

That version of Winky was IMO as effective as say, the Hop that Jones thought.

Not as his best, fairly raw, but still a damn good scalp.

    IN MY OPINION
