and I had just watched his fight on ESPN Classic last week, the guy put down the Mr. KO in the first round, and went on to win, rest in peace.
Mr. KO died almost 7 years ago too? :bart, makes no sense, I just watched their match... thought what are the 2 doing now a days?
One of Julio's good friends, another rated fighter in the same gym was killed in a car accident years ago as well. I can't remember his name but if I recall, he was also Hispanic. Anyone remember his name? R.I.P.
When I first heard that Julio Gonzalez had been killed, I was hoping it was some other guy as there are a few of them by that name. When I found out it WAS my old friend, I told my wife and she was shocked. We had known him since his am days and Julio was one of the nicest fighters we ever met. I had a couple of guys that used to spar with Julio and he was all smiles 'til the bell rang. He trained at the same LaHabra gym as Librado Andrade and his bro, Enrique Ornelas and man, those guys had wars in there. I asked Librado why you guys were so hard on Julio, and he said, "when we first started here, "Julio would kick our asses". I was always amazed at how much punishment Julio could absorb, with that gangly, fragile-looking body, but he was a TOUGH guy. He would get wobbled often in sparring. He was in some of the most grueling fights and was often seemingly on the verge of being ko'd and would come roaring back, like a Spanish Saad Muhammed. I was there when he faced Roy Jones and early on, he was very intimidated by Roy's speed, but he gained confidence and managed to go the distance, even winning a couple of late rds. So, rest in peace, my friend, there weren't too many like you and my wife and I offer condolences to your loved ones.
Quality fighter and a decent person from what I've seen and read of him, such a tragedy. R.I.P. Champ! You'll be missed, but not forgotten!
