on this day in 1951 randy turpin beat sugar ray robinson to win the latters world middle weight title.it was and still is one of the biggest upsets in boxing but turpin said he knew he would win the title exactly the way he did. some day the turpins will be recognised for what thay did for british boxing and britain itself. randy turpin is a legend and a true british lion, as were his older brothers, dick and jackie
I think SRR thought highly of Turpin, when they did that benefit thing for him in the Garden at the end of his career he made a point of making sure the Turpin was flown over
you're right mate, they thought very highly of one another.the sugarman very famously said he knew he'd have trouble with the licker when he saw turpins physique
was that the one about mills and turpin ?? there was a documentary about randy in 1986 and another documentary called the hardest game back in 79' that were both great.
I had the good fortune to see the second Ray Robinson/Randy Turpin fight at the Polo Grounds,Sept 12,1951...I still have the ticket stub i saved from the fight. we thought that Turpin ,big and unorthodox, and strong would stop Ray because of a very bad cut Robinson had over his eye... But the greatest fighter i ever saw went into his do or die mode, and stopped Turpin with a vicious attack in the tenth round...Every punch in Ray's arsenal exploded on the brave Turpin's jaw and as we know, the bout was stopped in round ten...Turpin started to go downhill after that fight....I will never forget that evening at the Polo Grounds....
thanks for that burt:goodthere was a hell of a crowd there, wasn't there ?? including some british matelots. wasn't it, the then biggest grossing non-heavyweight title fight ?? the sugarman really was awesome:good
That night was awesome for me and my friend...Awesome,We were young and adventurous and we somehow ended up in empty seats about 20-5 rows from ringside, though not sitting together...what I remembered most was seeing when we stood up Gen. Douglas MacArthur sitting not too far from ringside...Big thrill for all who saw the back of his head..He was so big a personality then...At the fight's end I remember Ray Robinson being escorted by his handlers towards his dressing room hurriedly..His face was so drained looking.Ray looked like he was on the verge of collapse then...He expended all his energy in the tenth round as his eye was so badly cut....What a fighter! What a night!
JD Thanks, but there is a law against homicide on ESB....One of the few compensations of aging is rich experiences of the past...And I have had my share of them !Thanks again !
No I have not sen Lew Jenkins fight but my father did.He raved about the"bag of Bones",Lew Jenkins murderous punching power...Jenkins seldom trained, and drank while riding motorcycles...One of the hardest hitting lightweights in history was Sweetwater Lew...
