It was such a pleasure seeing this great Champions reign during the 70s. 42 yrs since his final fight and a fight I thought he still looked great in; I had him winning handily even w/ the knockdown. I feel his record of 83 straight unbeaten after 1964. A 7 year title reign. 14 defenses. Along w/ DURAN the best fighter I ever saw in my lifetime. Here is to the Great MONZON! Thanks for the great memories! VIVA CAMPEON!
I was a huge Valdez fan at that time. Monzon schooled him in both fights. Carlos aside from several points in the fight controlled the action. The ease in which Monzon dominated such a talented fighter left no doubt in my mind as to his greatness.
I agree and Valdez wasa GREAT fighter. But, like DeJesus, another great fighter, is forgotten to the dustbins of history.
And here is Carlos giving the 2nd best guy in the division a rematch. when Carlos is the old guy. Just how many times have we seen that kind of risk and rematch w/ 37 year olds since? And then to win the fight.
Monzon proved his superiority over the 2nd best middleweight of the day...and he did so, as previously noted, as the older man by 4 years. He topped his already great career with a monumental, "off the floor and cut" demonstration of guts, skill and dominance. Not that many fighter/champions have equaled that.
