Good one! Jumbo had tremendous muscular development, including on the back of his neck. He'd need that cushion of protection to absorb the shock of Chuck's repeated rabbit punches. If Wepner got too dirty, Cummings wouldn't resort to the same lame mimickry Ali responded with. No, he'd BITE Chuck like he did Renaldo Snipes. Cummings was much stronger physically, had a lower center of gravity, and was a better puncher, in my estimation. By the time the oxygen consumption his huge muscles required had sapped his endurance, I think Wepner would indeed be too bloody to take advantage, and would have spent too much time in retreat to win on points. My best guess, since I'm relying on distant memory of Snipes-Cummings and Cummings-Frazier.
Cummings hit as hard as any of the top men in the business, and he was tough. A bout with Wepner, goes the distance. But it would be an ugly fight, imo. I wouldnt be surprised, though, if it was Cummings who came out on top.
I think that wepner wins by late tko. Cummings would get tired and become a victim of being musclebound.
If we were to look at these two side by side, then appearance would lead most people to believe that Cummings had the edge. Wepner looked like a pile of wet towels while Cummings was a sculpted muscle man.. Unfortunately, this is not how boxing works, and Chuck is far more proven against world class comp than Cummings is.... As mediocre as Wepner was, he could still pull out a big win every once in a while. Floyd on the otherhand, couldn't beat the crap out of a paper bag.. He failed in every one of his marquee fights, and many of his big named opponents were either past their best, too green, or just not very good to begin with.... Nevertheless, he lost to all of them.. Wepner by decision.
I think Cummings would do early on, given that his punching technique (while nothing special) was miles ahead of Wepner's and that he was the more textbook boxer. However, Wepner had stamina (or at least bloody-mindedness to match his bloody-facedness) and would probably hammer home a decision or late stoppage against the woefully undurable Cummings.
