Floyd Cummings was remembered as being a fairly muscular specimen, who gave some good fighters trouble. From what I'm told, he fought a young Bruno, and had him badly rocked at one point, resulting in Bruno's trainer Terry Lawless to grab Briuno's arm and stear him back into the corner at the sound of the bell. Bruno was badly rocked, and Lawless worked hard to revive him for the next round. Frank Came out in a heroic effort to win. Cumings fought a string of good fighters back to back in the early 80's losing most of them in competitive efforts. Sadly, he serving time in prison for a shooting that he comitted.
i remember the bruno fight and woddy's right, bruno was in big trouble.it was right on the bell at the end of the 1st round and cummings caught bruno with a monster of a right hand.bruno stiffened right up and was basically out on his feet arms by his side.fortunately he was in his own corner and lawless and his seconds rushed in and basically had to prop him up and sit him down on his stool.somehow they managed to bring him round and send him out for the 2nd where to be fair bruno showed plenty of guts surviving a frenzied assault from cummings. bruno eventually knocked him out i think in about the 7th round.
Bruno in trouble? LOL, The Bomber was out on his feet!!! Jumbo Cummings was a solid journeyman, and I am sure he was proud of his draw with Frazier, but I will always thank him for causing one of the funniest scenes I have seen in boxing. The sight of 5' nothing Terry Lawless trying to drag the 6' 4" Bruno back to his right corner at the end of the first round of the Cummings fight.
Cummings' claim to fame was that he could lift the back end of a car off the ground. They never said what kind of car. It was all prison muscle, he's spent most of his life behind bars. He was applied for a spot on the 1976 Olympic team but was ruled ineligible - he was serving time in Joliet for putting a gun to the head of a liquor store owner and pulling the trigger He was a big, strong, slow fighter, best known for almost knocking out Joe Frazier in Frazier's ill-advised 1981 comeback fight. Cummings was supposed to be an easy win for Frazier He's now back where he belongs, in prison, for a liquor store robbery in 2000. Since its the third strike, he's there for life He was also heavyweight champion of the world in 1981 (according to Pat O'Grady's WAA). He never defended the title, so technically he's still champion
Sportswriter Mark Kram described Cummings as "A congealed barrel of rust." But it was Cummings who showed us that while Bruno was a great British and European HW, he would never dominate in America.
Saw him fight Mitch Green, and he definitely lost, but about three times, he caught Mitch with some nice rights.
I've rarely seen such hard-looking muscle as Floyd Cummings had. Really strong man, apparently a terrific weight-lifter in prison. The muscles on his back were incredible. Not just big bulging steroid-muscle but real hard dense-looking muscle. Well, it's not often Frank Bruno's upstaged on the muscle front. It's a shame guys like Cummings end up committing more crime and murder and going back to jail after boxing doesn't work out for them. Clifford Etienne's another one who comes to mind.
I think Cummings could have been a better fighter with the right trainers and managers along with more stability in his life. He also didn't turn pro until he was over 30 years of age. Although he never defeated a ranked fighter, he certainly gave plenty of them enough trouble, and had the strenght and physique suited for a modern heavyweight. I read somewhere that he was involved in a murder or shooting or something that led to a long jail sentence, but don't have sources to back up the claim.
There never was a more fierce-looking guy to step into the ring. I don't know if there's ever been a more fierce-looking guy to step on the face of the planet. As everybody said, he was freakishly-muscled to a degree that you rarely see this side of a bodybuilding contest. But as a boxer, he was stiff enough to make George Foreman look like Willie Pep. He was a stand-up slugger without much movement or defense. Unfortunately, he didn't have much power, either. He could occasionally muster up some power with an overhand right against a stationary target (which he did against Bruno), but other than that, he was a lot scarier to look at than to fight. His fight against Renaldo Snipes was a relatively well-hyped crossroads match, and Jumbo looked like the far better physical specimen and meaner guy, but Snipes soon realized that Cummings was no match. Snipes hit him at will, and when Cummings realized he was in over his head, he did indeed bite Snipes on neck-shoulder area in a clinch. He did stagger Frazier in their match, but it looked like a weak cuff that was more proof that Frazier was way past done than it was proof that Cummings was hitting hard.
Floyd Cummongs could string together some solid yet very deliberate shots, He had squat physique and short arms that he pumped out like pistons.. He popped Bruno very well then caved in when Frank fought back furiously. With Frazier he did nothing special, he just basically nullified everything an aging joe did of note..
