Hi. I am new to boxing. Boxing isn't huge in South Korea, but I think I found a good gym. Is it recommended to jump right in, or should I figure some stuff out on my own before joining? Thank you, Daniel Kemp
Get in there you wont learn anything useful on your own! However getting a good level of fitness in your own time is always a good idea. But this can be done at the same time , no reason to wait go for it!
I tried to get my stamina up by running for a hour and 30 min every single day... It was totally useless. Jump straight in.
that isnt going to help very much mate, if you'd have researched into training a bit more youd have realised this isnt going to help a great deal with a sport that has huge anaerobic demands
Exactly. I thought that if i can run that much, i can at least box a few rounds. It was just wasted time and effort.
Nothing prepares you for boxing if you've never done it before, don't even worry about it. Take your time, give it time!
Most people thought the same. I know i did. "if i run 5-7 miles a day do 100 reps of bodyweight exercise "X" then i should be fine with boxing" Pfft didnt work out lol Nackered after 10 mins. Like its just been said best thing to get fit at boxing is boxing..... then when you can do the boxing work comfortably you start sparring.... and you realize that didnt prepare you either and your nackered after 30 seconds
Definitely don't try boxing on your own, but I think that physical training can help before starting boxing. I had two mates start boxing at my club, one guy who was a runner, cyclist and weight trainer whereas the other went jogging a few times a week and played football. The first guy progressed much more quickly.
Hey, another poster in Korea! I went to a gym last month and got turned away. They said 'no foreigners, only Koreans'. ****ing ****s.
Personally when i first started i was a normal out of shape person but just bit down and went to a gym. After a few months of training i injured my achillies and was out for a few months ( also went 4 months travelling) when i got back i started training seriously. Didnt go the boxing gym for a while but got in great shape. I was one of the fittest guys there when i went the second time and it did make a big difference. When everyone else was dying from the warm up i was ready to learn
Agreed. I was strong and 6% bodyfat when I first stepped foot in a gym, and couldn't jump rope for more than a minute! So yes, just jump right in, nothign can really prepare you!
when i walked into the gym first time i was overweight with man titties, quit for a few years and when i was 17 went back again and i was severely UNDER weight. you prepare for boxing by boxing.
it had taken me to go to a wrestling gym to realize the best way to box is jumping in and experiencing it with someone else. in hindsight of course this makes sense, but in the 90's when i started coaching in Canada there was an encouragement to not let boxers spar for about six months, letting them train on the floor for that time. after i'd been coaching a while i figured out that a person is most likely going to go off of instinct their first time in the ring, whether it's at 6 days or 6 months. Now i have everyone do partner drills from day one. get someone in front of you and experience it in a controlled environment (first research and find a gym/trainer that is responsible, trustworthy, knowledgeable and can comminicate) then ... JUMP IN!
