35 years ago today the Manassa Mauler died. This is a thread to say rest in peace to a ultra exciting fan favorite. No negativity please
Met him in NYC in 1974...not long before his restaurant on Broadway closed...I was dumbstruck...shook his hand...he was really nice!!!
This is incredibly cool. You didn't try to mug him, did you? ( kidding.) I think I've said this before, but it in his later interviews he looks and sounds so much like my grandfather it's eerie.
The man's a legend. Always enjoy watching him or reading about him. Was the first classic heavy I really got in to back in the day and my interest in him has never waned . A true Heavyweight star !
After 53 years experience as one of America's most distinguished sports writers, the incomparable Grantland Rice called DEMPSEY "the greatest attacking star in sports I've ever seen."
Jim Murray said, "When I hear the name "Jack Dempsey", I think of an America that was one big roaring camp of miners, drifters, bunkhouse hands, con men, hard cases men who lived by their fists & their shooting irons and by the cards they drew. America at High Noon." Beautiful man
Mickey Walker said, " I don't think the world will ever again see a man who releases such ferociousness, strength and visciousness in the ring."
You know what a champion is? A champion is someone who's ready when the gong rings - not just before, not just after - but when it rings. Jack Dempsey. Not a bad philosophy for any boxer. RIP Champ.
met him a couple of times....had the strongest hands on earth....the greatest of all times was a gentleman and a gentle man..everybody liked him
I must be tired at the end of my work week. I saw the thread title and said to myself, "Oh no! Jack Dempsey died!" I hope you continue to rest in peace, champ.
