Maybe so but without stopping Castillo early in VEGAS and calling Mayweather out live on American TV he may not have got the shot at Mayweather?!

Indeed man , Im not trying to denegrate Ricky he was a good fighter and his career was run well. This populist thing of looking back and saying he was pish is bull****.

But for me , from a purely sporting point of view , thats when he should have fought witter

Because Ricky did not want that possibly embarrassing fight. Not to say Ricky didn't have the tools to beat Witter, but Witter was an unorthodox showboat. So losing to him was magnified by that weird style and cocky attitude of his.

I don't think Witter had what it took to stop a young Ricky, but he damned sure had enough to make him look bad and either get an ugly decision or ruin any chances of him getting huge paydays from the likes of Mayweather by making him look bad, e.g. Froch/Dirrell.

I wish they had gotten it on, but honestly for what Witten brought to the table versus the heights Ricky reached? Ricky may have made the right decision.

The idea that Hatton would have been stopped by Witter in their primes is laughable. It's easy to say that now, after Hatton has been stopped twice, but in his prime, he was a really tough opponent who walked through punchers. He had a great chin and, yeah, it was dented late in his career, but there is very little reason to suspect Witter could hurt Hatton, never mind stop him.

I think Hatton was always wrong for Hatton. Again, it's easy to look at Hatton's late career and think Witter could have given him issues, but in the time that both were in their primes, Hatton's style would have been awful for Witter. He would have used pressure to shut him down completely and either stop him late or probably shut him out. Hatton's style is wrong for Witter, not the other way around.

As for why it didn't happen, there are three stages to look at. Early on, Warren promoted both of them and Hatton asked Warren to make a fight, but as it was a potentially tough fight and Witter brought no money, Warren didn't make it. It wasn't Hatton's fault that the fight didn't happen. In the second stage, after Hatton beat Tszyu, he was P4P and looking at getting the big fights and trying to conquer America. Whilst he was doing this, Witter was stinking out arenas with 2000 fans, against no name opponents. He only became a legitimate name in 2007 after beating Harris, but by that time, Hatton was in line to fight Mayweather. At this 'second stage', they were on two completely different levels of stardom, not to mention Hatton was suing Warren, which made it impossible. The most realistic chance of them fighting, was the third time after Hatton lost to Mayweather. ITV showed the Bradley fight and it was almost certain that, if he won, Witter would get a shot at Hatton in his next bout. He was soundly beaten.

The fight should have happened but Hatton doesn't deserve blame for it not happening. Warren should have put the two against each other early in their careers, Witter should have done more to make himself a realistic opponent and he should have beaten Bradley. Had this happened, we would have seen it, but that's boxing.

He first ducked Witter in 2000, Hatton didn't fry any bigger fish until 2005

It's a bizzness after all & Frank Warren needs no lessons in promoting a cash cow as in Hatton who had a huge following from a huge industrial blue collar city + his affiliation with a major football club which brought in cross-over fans so making him a marketing dream in connecting him with the mainstream man in the street. He was a $$$$ "Gold Mine" & poor old Jr Witter had **** all to offer exept the ability to **** up Franks Multi-Million $$$$ plans for Hatton + also ****in up my future trips to Vegas.

Witter would have boxed Rickies ears off IMO & also some off Hatton's reasons for not fighting Witter are pretty lame & the worse one was that "I'll never give him a payday as he disrespeted me" this happened at the BBC's Sports personality of the year awards when Witter wispered into Hattons ear & said "One Day":smoke

    Haton would have murdered Witter.

He just didn't want to give the idiot ( and his promotor)a payday.

Think it was more Frank warren though.

They were both with Warren in that period. Both men asked Warren to make the fight, but he didn't. Warren's reluctance to make the fight with Witter, was one of the reasons Hatton ended up splitting from him.

This plus it wasn't a big fight back. No one knew Witter and it wasn't really a step forward at that stage of his career.

Had Witter continued to improve pick up a few titles then the fight would have been much more appealing and Im sure it would have happened

Bottom line - Witter is ****

It's stupid that it never happened. The fight could have been made at a domestic level, far before Hatton's "bigger fish to fry" crap. Imagine if Enzo Mac and David Haye never fought...it's just ludicrous. You're going to tell me that Carlos Maussa was a fight that more fans wanted to see?

he was called out by witter at 140 (before he fought at 147 ever) and floyd and pac were never in his sights at that stage. he was running 140 at that time. so no.
