This guy has always fascinated me. When I think of German fighters, I think of gentlemen like Max Schmelling and Henry Maske. Then you've got Jurgen Brahmer, who seems like a certified headcase. I know all about his prison stint and his penchant for pulling out of fights at the last minute. Boxing Monthly did a story about him titled "Public Enemy Number Ein" before he was to fight Cleverly, but I don't remember it mentioning anything I hadn't already known other than a rough upbringing in East Germany.

I was just wondering if anyone knows why he's such a mercurial figure. Can anyone weigh in? German posters? Is he popular? I actually like the guy. I'm probably in the minority given his behavior over the past few years, but hey.

    Brahmer/Shumenov

    Brahmer/Cleverly

    Yeah, Jurgen made those classics!

    ---

Pulled out of the Shumenov unification with 48 hours until fight time.

Now Shumenov gets **** for fighting Joppy when Boxrec Warriors get to work.

Never had a problem with Shumenov fighting Joppy.
But, i did have a problem with how Shumenov acted to him in the weigh in and presser.
Should have been thankful that Joppy stepped in.

He's not particularly popular im Germany. Nowhere near Sturm or Abraham let alone the Klits. Even Zbik and Sylvester have probably a bigger fanbase than him. He used to fight on undercards of more popular German boxer but has gone AWOL a couple of months ago.
Unfortunately I can't provide a reason for his jail affinity - apparently he's just another usual criminal who hung out with the wrong people.

He is scheduled to return on the 28. The same card with Chagaev, Boytsov, Arslan and Chakiev. But lets see

I suspect the Germans just prefer boring well-behaved, consistent, disciplined guys.
I don't think hes seen as a public enemy or something from what i know he has a decent fanbase in the northern part. Travling to Kazakh, drinking their water, eating in a local restaurant etc then getting ill is amateurish but sounded very legit to me. the other fights he cancled were about money issues from what I know. I've been told that ****** did actually pay him 140 per cent of his original purse out to stay at home so that he could get Cleverly the belt and milk him with bum fights for some years..
however hes probaly rather like Rocchigiani was in the era before. Rocchigiani was definitely better than Maske, Ottke, Michalczewski who were bigger stars though. Brahmer also is probably the best german based fighter of his generation based on his ability imo

German fighters with a belt do avoid any dangerous guy out there.
Even more than Bob Arum could do for them.

It seems to be you just have to be average and have spent a week on holiday there to be a big boxing star in Germany.Braehmer could be the best of their current homegrown crop but he's too much of a bad boy to be really popular.Strange, when you consider he's better than many of the "immigrant" fighters that are popular there.I read once that he had some troublesome skinhead fans but that's purely speculation.I'd like to have seen him fight Cleverly. Not too impressed by the Welshman if I'm honest. He does incite some curiousity for me too.A mysterious character.

He had a very good amatuer pedigree but never made the most of his considerable talent.

I thought he would beat Clev, shame it never happened.
