I dislike Leonard, but look at boxing objectively.

That was not the Hagler that had destroyed everyone in his years as champ.

That was not even peak Leonard to be fair, but for the gameplan he implemented both fighters were at the right place for Leonard to snatch the title.

Macc vs Haye.... was absolutely convinced Enzo was going to take Haye to pieces

 

Good read though, as you say, caution should be advised due to the biased nature of the author.

I hear this arguement quite often, that Leonard simply waited until he knew he could beat Hagler. Maybe its true but he'd been out for nearly three years and had had 1 fight in 5 years. Are we expected to believe that he simply kept himself in fighting condition for 5 years JUST to beat Hagler?

Yes he ****ed Hagler around with stupid PR moments/stunts like his "retirement" conference but was a victory over Hagler the thing he wanted more than anything else?

I was gonna say this one as well.

Although I am very much a Haye fan I thought that Enzo was gonna win this one.

I still think it was a 50 50 fight at the time but Enzo really didn't comit to the fight and his tactics went out the window from the first bell.

He also should have taken a knee the first time he got hurt.

 

Seconded. When I saw Enzo sprint to the ring though I began to have my doubts about his mind state. I think Enzo defeated himself that night.

guarenteed, he let the hype get to him while Haye revelled in it.

What was worse was when I was describing to my mates (who know next to nothing about boxing) how much of a beating Haye was going to take throughout the whole build up only to look like a complete muppet on fight night.

Still got love for Enzo though

looking back on it enzo prolly wouldnt of won but i think i preffered him just becuase he was more of an inside fighter who had the body work and could wack just as hard (thats not controversial opnion is it?). you look at the fragomeni fight and the thompson fight it was the pressure to hayes low gunslinger defence which made him look susceptable.
also enzo's trench war with mark hobson made me think that he could take punishment more than people where expecting

haye just too fast and compact. when enzo did that 1,1,2 (haye lands heavy counter right hook),3. you could see it wasnt gonna turn out well.

 

"Sorcery...." is a potentially good book spoiled by the writers bias. The facts being Leonard-Hagler are such that he could have made his points without resorting to the lies and half-truths with made him look like such an biased, and therefore unreliable IMHO, source.
