Donaire has been making a lot of noise claiming that he will do a pacquiao by being a multi-division champ and getting belts up to the lightweigth division as he claims. While he has skills (mind you, not "THE skills") to be a multidivision champ, his performance last weekend belies his claims and ambitions. True, he fought a guy who is much heavier and at most can be classified as a B- fighter (being generous here). But, if Donaire cannot KO this guy (a bantamweight), I just cant see him having any success against the heavier and more skilled fighters in the bantamweight division. Also, I noticed that with all the noise he is making, he is getting limited love from his countrymen. Maybe this is due to the fact that he is, correct me if Im wrong, an American citizen and in fact, he even tried out for the US Boxing Olympic team, only to lose to Brian Viloria. Some even say he just embraced his Filipino roots again because he needs the Filipino market to fillup seats in his fights and had he really loved his roots that much, he would have tried out for the Philippine boxing team and might have qualified for the Olympics easier than in th US where there are more talented amateurs. I the end, I think he realy needs a big win to jumpstart his career again and back up all his talk. Otherwise, he will be remembered not as a great fighter, not a s achampion, but just a guy who KOd Vic (the latter moving on very well after the KO and making a better career than Donaire) Cheers!
its different when you are actually putting on the weight. You think Pacquiao when he was weighing in at 122 would have been able to knock out Hatton at 140? You develop your body into weightclasses and your body gradually gets accustomed to the bigger weights as you fight bigger opponents and train to put on mass I can see Donaire jumping up to 118 within 9 months. I don't think he will have more than 1 more fight at 115. and he is still really young. That'll be already 3 divisions + Donaire has been talking about moving through weights, but i don't see him claiming to be the next Pacquiao. He just wants to be the best he can. He is always putting Pacquiao on a pedestal I think that the trio of Donaire, Linares and JuanMa make for a new generation of little fighters that will live up to the last one in every way. And throw in Rigondeaux too even though he's a little older.
Youll see plenty of Donaire nuthugging on here dont worry..There are over a dozen posters who talk of nothing but Pac and Nonito..even going as far to, quite ingeniously sometimes, link back every thread they possibly can to them. All things considered I dont think that was a bad performance at all...Concepion was no mug and he didnt even try to make the weight. I like him and want to see him succeed..but I was snickering a little bit about how he left Shaw because he didnt feel he was getting the right opportunities only to have the same issues under Arum.
true I dont think pac can do that, but I think the example is too stretched. remember everytime pac fights people always say that with his performance, (which usually ends in a KO) he can move on to the next higher division because he apears to have the power to do so. Of course, I forgot to factor in Donaire's claim that he injured his hand. maybe my opinion of his power and skills when taken to the higher weights will change once we get verification of the injury. I concede that he was able to hurt concepcion early but did not finish him (again the "injured" hand might be the culprit) but against guys in the higher weight in the mold of vasquez, rafa, he might hita brick wall
Donaire busted his left hand and didn't brawl much as he would have liked. And ah.. Concepcion refused to wear 10 ounces which was a punishment for coming over the limit. He also had 10 pounds adv..heavier than Donaire on fight day. Nonito weighted 122 Concepcion 134.. Overall It wasn't a bad as the haters say it was.
good points, but sometimes people read into too many things. He's a good boxer. He didn't put on a performance like he could and should have. maybe he was injured maybe he wasn't. We don't know how that factored in his perfomance. He looked like sh*t. It happens. You gotta remember EVERYONE is ducking the guy and I've always thought that a Viloria-Donaire showdown is a must.
yes it was not that bad a performance but we have to consider that with such performance, will he be able to deliver in th ehigher weights?
well as soon as he faced a little problem, like a broken hand, he didint quit. he actually beat the crap out of the guy for 12 rounds.
IIRC, he was born in the Philippines, lived the first 10 years of his life in the Philippines, then left for the states and lived there permanently. He is well respected and well liked by the Filipinos in the Philippines. He's just not as popular as MP. It's not because he's Fil-AMerican, or because he didnt try to represent the Philippines in the olympics. Some fighters just have that certain X factor that makes them really popular to his people, like MP. Donaire may have some of it, but not as strong as MP's. I mean, look at Mexico. El Terrible and Barrera's way more popular than JMM, even if the 3 of them are of similar skills and talents. Why?
lackluster performance was because of the left hand injury in the 2nd round, still managed to adjust and won convincingly. He is much appreciated by his countryman, but not to the level of Pac who is being marketed on a much higher stage. A normal thing, IMO.
And his fights were not as available to the Filipino fans. The first fight of his that I saw was against Darchinyan. His brother Glenn's fights had better TV exposure than Nonito's, befiore the Darchinyan KO win.
It was good enough win. However old issues were more apparent in this fight. It's already been pointed out that he doesn't jab consistently, doesn't hold his hand up, workrate can drop off coz he relies on one punch at a time. Unfortunately this issues has not been addressed. And i can't understand people who were saying he needs new trainers. Are you listening to the corner? They were asking him to jab in the 2nd rd. Combination punching. It's just not getting thru. When he jabs his way, he forced Conception to reset. When he lets his hand go, Conception back away. His "running" was not effective. FMJ when he runs disrups his opponents rythm. Donaire, when he was running, just ups Conceptions confidence. It allows him to get into the groove instead of disrupting his rythm.
if the corner says something and it doesn't get through, then they didn't prepare their fighter well enough. And i was hearing the translator saying things like "Destroy him!" and "He's tired!"
I don't think he adjusted enough. Granted he busted his hand and he has to run. But he was still getting outjabbed bcoz he does not hold his hand up. That has nothing to do with his busted hand. He was also allowing Conception to build up his confidence when he was running. He should have mix it up at times to stop Conception from stalking him. Instead he just pop one punch at a time. With a bully like Conception, you wont be able to back him up with that. You need combination punching and a good jab to force him to reset. The Penalosa were asking him to jab and he seems to do that as an afterthougt.
