No, seriously though, I just find it entirely remarkable that so many so-called boxing fans glibly refer to pro-fighters as 'bums' or similar. It'd be bad enough just to use the term about journeymen, but even top 10 fighters in a division are often described in the same way.

IMO it says far more about the posters that type such rubbish than about the fighters themselves.

As has been pointed out by others I'd far rather see a fighter fight the best guys available than hang on to an 0 by avoiding real threats. It sure as hell doesn't trouble me in the slightest if a guy has a few losses on his record, specially if they have a strong overall resume - in fact a number fighters have come back stronger after early losses.

Similarly, there seems to be an automatic assumption that because a fighter has received more mainstream (especially US) exposure it automatically makes them a superior fighter, whereas as often as not it's simply a matter of chance - of where they happened to be born, of a lucky break here or there, of going to the right gym..

If you look at a guy like Kovalev, who was on the verge of quitting in 2012 after the tragedy and a few years of the US circuit without getting a break and turned down by promoter after promoter.... I sometimes wonder how many other guys are out there, just waiting for the break - some of them maybe with a loss or two, just because fighters have bad nights (I wonder if Duva would have looked at Kovalev if he'd happened to lose the decision against Boone).
