Just Because An Opponent Has Lost Or Isn't A Name Doesn't Invariably Make Them A Bum.

At the other extreme stands CST80 who routinely overrates fighters. Seriously, half the guys you tell us to check out are future contenders not future champions. I appreciate the effort you put in around here and by all means keep it up but not every fighter needs his own thread. Some people just refuse to say a mean word about any fighter. It's like listening to an HBO commentary where no matter how bad a man is getting battered he's a "warrior" showing "a lot of heart."

I think the only guys I've ever seen you write anything bad about were Rigondeaux and Canelo who are both stellar fighters. By the way, I don't think that Usyk is a bum. I just think that there is a ceiling on how much he'll accomplish in the sport and if I had to guess based on the way he fights, I'd say it's about as much as Eddie Chambers or Tomasz Adamek putting him in the good but not great range. Oh, and Usyk has clown hair.

I also think that the "bum" phenomena is probably a reaction to some over zealous fans hyping a fighter up beyond his abilities. Was Provodnikov ever the monster he was made out to be? All the fights I've seen him in he was plodding and one dimensional. Is Rios a holy terror? Why because he smashed a washed up junky? Is Lomachenko the next Floyd Mayweather? Half the country just saw Salido take him to school. Salido! Same goes for Lemieux getting schooled then drilled by Rubio.

There are a lot of threads around here, mostly made by British fans, about how Tyson Fury is the greatest heavyweight that ever lived and I think that it's perfectly normal for the rest of the forum to opine that he looks like a poor man's Klitschko. Or for the Americans making threads about how great Wilder is, it's only natural for a practical few to want to pop that balloon by mentioning that most of Wilder's victims were geriatric patients hooked up to life support and left unattended in the ring.

It's called managing expectations. I saw a great example of what I'm talking about recently when I watched the Linares vs DeMarco fight from 2011. The HBO crew were building up Linares like I've never heard anyone praised by a commentary crew before. They compared Linares to Ray Robinson for four rounds! Then bad things started happening to Linares and he lost by knockout. I'm not saying that Linares is a bum by any means. He probably is what Ray Robinson would be if you took away his power and chin, but those are kind of important.

I don't care if a fighter is World class or a journeyman calling them a coward or Cowardzaghe from the comfort of your keyboard on the internet is more cowardly than anything that fighter has done in the ring. Take Herol for example who goes around on every thread he posts on calling Calzaghe a coward for what? Being a professional fighter it's ridiculous. Mario Veit has more courage than the keyboard warrior Herol where in reality if he confronted the fighter he has such disdain for and heckled him ( which he does not have the courage to do even though he apparently hates Joe so much he spends most of his life smearing him on a forum) Joe would smack the **** out of him. Charlie Z might have an over inflated sense of importance but at least when he talk sh*t he went at it with Wilder regardless of the results. Herol will come on here and say he doesn't call him a coward or that it's not fair he's not a professional fighter, no your not Herol your just a keyboard warrior who hates on someone who earned his bread fighting for a living. No fighter not even Mario Veit deserves to be called a coward...

Part of it I'm sure is that people don't appreciate boxing below a certain level. Do you love music or do you love The Beatles/Mozart? Some people just want to go to the Metallica concert and could care less what local Indy band is playing at the neighborhood bar.

I get that. After I'm done watching the proven quantities of Klitschko, Kovalev, Ward, Golovkin, Mayweather, Pacquiao, Danny Garcia, Crawford, Donaire, Rigondeaux, Roman Gonzalez and a handful more I feel like I know what's going on with the current state of the sport and I don't want to sift through the B and C level fighters for future prospects. I've still got Roberto Duran, Julio Cesar Chavez, and Marvin Hagler fights I haven't watched yet.

    Well spoken,mate! Excellent post!:good

The "term" is used far too frequently among some posters here on esb.

Are guys like Sedrick Fields,Sergej Karanevich or Ismail Abdoul bums?? They have fought the who is who in their weight division, scored the occasional upset, and always gave a good fight.Bums????

    I agree with all this.

However, if I'm playing devil's advocate, when people call world class ranked fighters "bums," I think it is obviously a relative term, usually compared to their scheduled opponent or to where most fans are currently hyping them.

Very wise words my friend. It is only poseur fans who dksab that use such a term.If they truly had any idea as to what it takes to be a professional boxer they would have far more respect and know never to use such a derogatory term when discussing these brave and talented people. The knowledgeable fans they understand but these dumb poseurs who only pretend to be into the sport so they can look cool in front if their mates they are the ones who call fighters bums. They should **** off to MMA or soccer.
