I was wondering, is wearing boxing footwear was important for safety when doing boxing?

I've read people say that you can hurt your knees if you wear the wrong footwear.

Will you hurt yourself if you train in boxing and you wear Cross Trainers or Converse Chuck Taylors?

I don't think it will hurt, just a little harder to move

Not really. Boxing is such a game of endurance and feel that guys want as minimal a shoe as possible. A couple ounces makes a HUGE difference.

Hurting your knees? I have only heard of that from skipping or running on a hard surface in your Boxing shoes. I skip in mine no prob though. I prefer it. No knee problems for me.

No, but your foot/toe strength may not fully develop and your footwork may suffer a bit. Don't let that stop you though. Training in crap shoes or barefoot is better than not training.

I always wear basketball shoes for boxing training and have never had any issues.

I just don't run in them cause then I'll get issues with shin splints etc.

Is it fine to use basketball shoes, Converse shoes, and/or cross trainers for training AND sparring? Or should you wear boxing shoes for sparring?

I wear them for all my boxing training except for running.

Honestly you won't notice much of a difference. Most important is to make sure you are moving your feet properly, not what kind of shoes you are wearing.

I'd avoid cross trainers and running shoes. They have a lot of grip and can really be annoying on canvas.

Also, not good for pivoting. I forgot my boxing shoes one day and wore my running shoes instead...ripped right through the side of one of them while pivoting.

    Basketball shoes work best imo.

On running shoes I always feel like I'm risking injury in my ankles because the soles are thicker and I misstep because of that / trip over something. The less shoe the better, not just weight-wise.

Agreed, I started wearing Jordan boxing shoes last year, and they feel like socks on your feet. The lighter and more aerodynamic the shoe, the better you'll feel in the ring. Running shoes are made to absorb impact so naturally they have too much bulk for the fluid movement that boxing requires. Just my opinion.

My friend likes that mma crap and owns a pair of wrestling shoes which resembled boxing shoes. I did some research and found that wrestling shoes and boxing shoes are the same. I use his old wrestling shoes all the time when sparring. The cool thing is wrestling shoes are cheaper because wrestling is not as popular as boxing. They work great and give me more traction in the ring.

    Wrestling shoes= 43.00$

    Agreed.

And even that is not a very bright plan according to newer research on bare foot running. The more a shoe tries to absorb, the less your natural absorption will work. Your foot is supposed to absorb impact, but the shoe's thick sole ruins this mechanism. Your knees and ankles will take most of the blow instead, often with injuries as a result.
