I think the Williams fight was a draw at WORST. I had Martinez by couple of rounds.

Point is, if he's that competitive with two top 10 fighters, he is no can as you imply. He's actually the perfect style to beat Pavlik.

 

Anyone who dismisses Martinez is an imbecile. He gave Williams his toughest fight, and many thought Martinez deserved the win. And he's not even a proper MW. Whether Pavlik's size, youth and power advantage will be too much for him is yet to be determined, but Martinez is top pfp fighter and deserves respect. I could easily see him outpointing Pavlik and getting robbed again, like in the Cintron debacle. I could also see the fight ending with Pavlik laid out on his ass.

 

This fight isn't on HBO or Showtime? Dammit!

I didn't imply he was a can at all. He's a reasonably decent fighter who has yet to actually beat anyone to frank that assessment. I quite like him and think he should be in the mix at LMW.

I don't see the 'he has the perfect style to beat Pavlik' at all. Pavlik was overrated horrifically on ESB for a time and is now underrated where it seems that he is expected to lose to anyone who has ever been seen throwing a counterpunch. Martinez has leaky defence, a not particularly stellar chin, not enough power to trouble Pavlik and not big enough to match strength with him. That all adds up to the perfect recipe to get steadily pummelled after some early success and get stopped in the mid-rounds.

 

In fairness to the Pav-fans, I don't think that's true. His defence is based around agility, flexibility, balance and counter-movement, which leads people in and against which he can counter-attack. The downside of this is that he leaves himself open if he gets it wrong. He got it wrong a few times against the beanpole and I don't think he can afford to get it wrong too many times against Pavlik or he'll get smacked. The other area is that Martinez' style would be more of a nightmare if he could really bang, but he can't. He's not a weak puncher, but he's not the sort of power hitter that would make his style nightmarish for Kelly, either. If he's going to pull off the upset, there will be a few hairy moments along the way.

 

Weighing in at 160lbs in early career non-title bum workouts does not equate to 'fighting at middleweight' in my view, or most people apart from Booradley.

A more interesting question is does the WBC know he has the WBC belt? I mean, normally if you get upgraded from interim to full champion, they expect you to fight a mandatory fairly soon, right? But Martinez appears to have had the title for over a year without ever fighting for it or defending it once :huh

 

WBC will give him a pass on this fight because it is two of their champs fighting I would think. How long ago was Cintron? Pdub made them some decent money so they won't complain about that one either...
