Jones v Calzaghe was done without any other promoters, but still did more PPV buys in America than Hopkins/Pavlik plus UK money from Setanta who were paying over the odds for Sports rights at the time. That's why Calzaghe made a deal more money than he would have made from fighting Pavlik and slicing the pie with various promoters.

I think you're getting fairly delusional with the 'almost as big as Pac/Floyd' though. Seriously? Pavlik v Hopkins sold less than 200k on HBO PPV. Jones v Calzaghe sold less than 250k. What, Pavlik v Calzaghe was going to capture the imagination of America?

I had a dream last night that it went to the cards and Martinez pulled off the upset.

I only dreamt the end tho, so I don't see how that's actually possible in real life.

The thread title is even more tasteless than my "leaves on a stretcher" title. Pavlik is Champ is a full time troll. I only do it part time.

Martinez has several problems in this fight.

1; Pavlik is the best "boxer" Sergio has ever faced. Kelly is strategically, tactically, and fundamentally better than anyone Sergio has fought.

2; Martinez has two dangerous weapons; the straight lead left, and the right hook. Unfortunately, he telegraphs the lead left from 3 feet out, and he is extremely predictable with the right hook. If he is coming in from the left side, he will throw a right hook. When he does, his head and body are both wide open to right hands.

3; The speed and mobility advantage is a bit of a red herring. If Martinez wants to win 7 rounds, he has to engage. When Sergio engages he does not work his way in with a good jab and clever footwork. He tends to rush in face first with little regard for defense. (See point #2.)

4; Sergio ends up with his back on the ropes far to often for my liking, and that is never a safe place to be when Pavlik is after your narrow ass!

5; Martinez routinely gets hit with right hands. I do not think I need to expand on this point.

6; Sergio Martinez will be the smallest man Pavlik faced since back when he was still taking catchweight fights as low as 155. KP is very much acclimated to fighting big, strong guys. Sergio has never faced a legit middleweight. Martinez likes to brawl in close, and that is a serious problem.

7; Contrary to popular opinion, Sergio is not hard to find. Small middleweights with leaky defense generally do not fair well against KP.

8; Power is a huge factor in this fight. If KP can find a guy with right hands, he will knock that guy out, and Kelly can definitely find this guy.

You keep talking about the numbers thrown around, but can you even prove that Arum contacted Calzaghe? I've never seen proof he did. I'm pretty sure the only person he contacted was Warren, who Calzaghe was suing at the time so all these numbers and 'facts' you like to thrown around, aren't worth much, are they?

I'm calling you out on this. Back these claims up.

Even if you were right, which is debatable, Calzaghe made much more from fighting Jones, a tougher opponent.

And your claim that it would be as big as Mayweather/Pacquiao is ****ing funny. You stick to talking about Pavlik and his victims.

It's not a huge fight now and it wasn't then. A Jones fight made more sense financially.

 

There was NO approach to Calzaghe. Find me anything saying Arum went to Calzaghe instead of Warren, who calzaghe was suing, and you may have a point.

It was all hype from Arum.
