i suppose it all depends on how you think about it..if he had of fought on and took punishment from byrd he still wud have won a ud..but wud he still be around if he did??i very much doubt it tbh he wud have taken more punishment in those last few rounds than hes takin since his comback so i think it was the right decision to prolong his carrer he obviously was thinking about the long term

At that point, VK could have won by keeping distance and just using the good arm.

He hurt his shoulder, and was well ahead on the cards with 2 or 3 rounds left and he quit gave away his title.
Holyfield fought Byrd, and a similar thing happend, Evander didnt quit but was dominated.
However in both fights you can see that Byrd jabs that left shoulder area of his opponent, and I am sure that is what caused both injurys.
it did not have an effect on him retiring, I dont know if it was a freak injury or a previous one.
What I do know is that he quit with less than ten mins left in the fight and had himself a wide lead on the cards.... What I also know was that at that time he wasnt hitting Byrd as much and suddenly byrd started to hit him at will.... So there are lots of questions regarding why he really quit, we will never know if it was just the injury, or the injury and the fact that Byrd was turning it on.... or both.
The one thing we do not forget and wont forget is that he quit.

I'd always thought he could get away with not using his bad arm but someone mentioned a tear earlier? Was there a big threat of the tear growing?

I'm sure if he was a 6'7 250 pound trained fighter that was so much superior to his much smaller 6'0 210 pound feather fisted opponent that he was beating up on for 9 rounds he would have did that.

It didn't seem like he was in excruciating pain. However, maybe he couldn't lift his arm, and felt like he was defenseless. I just can't see Byrd knocking him out with any power shots. I always thought he could've clicnhed and ran for 6 minutes, but he more than redeemed himself against Lewis.

Yeah I agree with the consensus really.

He could and perhaps should have carried on. Maybe he felt like he'd already asserted his dominance enough that quitting through injury wouldn't look bad.

Definitely proved himself against lewis, sanders and peter. Them 3 fights will arguably define him unless he carries on for a significant amount of time.

The reality is tho that the two best boxers vitali faced both beat him.
