Just how good is Kovalev?

I wasn't to be honest because Campillo had a **** camp and was very underprepared, but after what he did to Cleverly, there's no doubt he is a serious operator and he will be avoided for sure now (if he wasn't before, credit to Cleverly for taking the fight)

 

He was a lil staggered by cleverly, i'm guessing a guy like stevenson could possibly ko him.

 

Michalczewski was a hype job and once he stepped up he got exposed. Kovalev would have took DM out in 2 rounds.

 

Yeah I seen that but he looks like he has power in both hands and he is not as easy to hit as GGG.

 

I think b-hop and stevenson have the best chance against kovalev. B-hop has great stamina, chin, and he would frustrate along with taking kovalev in deep water. Stevenson is the hardest puncher in the division and kovalev would have to be extra careful about opening up, because one hard shot could put him to sleep.

 

To come so far away from home, even being based in the US, into that atmosphere and looking so comfortable and classy from the first bell is special, I thought he was a special talent and Saturday ticked quite afew more boxes IMO.

 

he will SLOWLY take over the LHW ranks. He will have to fight a lot of bums in between but he will get a shot at top level guys along the way. Maybe by the end of 2015 he can have unified the belts?

 

I've never seen it either, Boone also knocked Ward on his arse in round 4 of their fight too.

 

Kovalev is the best light heavyweight in the world today. He would knock Hopkins out. Hopkins refused to fight Kovalev, so instead of waiting forever to force Hopkins to fight him he took the Cleverly fight instead. Kovalev will knock all the light heavyweight champions out, no doubt about it.

C'mon. Would be lovely now, but in the real world you don't put together LHWs vs MWs. They used to spar together at the Summit, I don't know what GGG says, but Kov says GGG kicks like a mule. Sanchez' view was that "Kov didn't do what I expected against Golovkin" - my interpretation of this, in the light of other comments, is that Kovalev elected to box against Golovkin, who he recognised as a dangerous hitter, 'stead of going to war on him.

Normally there can only be one winner in a MW vs LHW at top level, and I'd have to favour Kovalev, but Golovkin is really on a level above in terms of fight IQ. Either 'gainst Ward is something I'd love to see.

i picked Cleverly to win, but he got his tactics completely wrong. Kovalev though, is real calm in there. he doesn't telegraph anything. you can't even get a reading on his body language for what shots are coming.

you know when someone is going to throw the right hand because of the way they are positioned, but not Kovalev. that shot just comes from nowhere. you think he's not going to throw, then bam! i saw that in the fatal fight with the Russian guy. same thing happened with Cleverly.

the guy doesn't have stamina though. i'm 100% certain of that now. after 2 rounds you could see how red his body had got from burning so much energy up. in the 3rd he started to really slow down, but we really didn't get enough time to see it because a few seconds later, he clipped Cleverly then started to unload with the big shots.

that will come into play in the near future. he should do as much road work as he can to give him as much stamina as he can muster. if he doesn't, it could prove to be his Achilles' heel.

even though i picked Clev, i still made £100 by making a £100 pounds bet for a Kovalev win at evens.
it was the interview that he did just before the weigh-in that got me a bit rattled. he looked a bit sullen, and i've never seen him like that before a fight. you could tell that he was starting to believe in the Kovalev hype. so i thought that if he lost, it would cushion the blow a little.
i'm not going to lie though, i would have preferred to have gotten the Cleverly win and lost the money. but hey, you can't turn your nose up at £100. it still hurts like crazy mind. LOL

when the Anthems were being done, Clev closed his eyes for some time to summon up the strength for battle. i could see he was going to lose. he did the same thing at the end of round 1.

he'll be back. just hope he gets another trainer to take him to the next level, because his dad just isn't going to do that. it's obvious to see.
he needs to forget about loyalties and ****, just do whats best for your career.

I believe that Kovalev is the best light heavyweight in the world at this time. He is much better than most people realize. Roach had lots of good things to say about Kovalev before he fought Cleverly.

 

You're right about Clev though - he needs to think it through, but if he decides to keep at boxing, he absolutely needs another trainer. He does have ability, and the stamina and speed, but to me, in a way, he's always seemed to treat his boxing a little lightly. If he's gonna continue, he needs to commit 100%.
