On the one hand: -The ONLY boxer to have clearly defeated Sergio Martinez -Took Cotto's 0 by bloody stoppage, led to him being recognized as the best WW in the world and p4p rated. -had 8 losses but 3 of those occurred when he was a teenager and should be looked at in context when accessing his larger career. On the other: -entire career in question once the loading was exposed, was completely dismantled by every elite fighter he faced thereafter. -even if he wasn't loaded against Martinez the fight occurred when they were both very young and Martinez was a germ of the fighter he became Honestly, the jury is still out on this one for me.
good thread i'm a sceptic. as you said, margarito loading his gloves throws serious doubt over the cotto win - and that was compounded by cotto winning the rematch after margarito got done for the plaster, he lost more fights than he won
that's a myth margo had just beaten cintron when people were calling for a Floyd fight, and that's also when he walked in on a Floyd press conference since then, he got done for plaster and, as I've said above, lost more fights than he won after that
Loaded gloves. Even if you look at his resume, he is beyond overrated by most on this forum... He was no great era defining welterweight. He was no supreme destroyer. People will have you trying to believe these things...
I see what your saying, but at the same time it's hard for me to believe the gloves elevated him SO MUCH above what he would have been without them. We also don't know the quantity of fights he was actually loading in.
He was a beast. First man to break cotto. First man to break Martinez. First man to make Floyd **** his pants. In his short career he was the man that nobody wanted to fight.
depends which Margarito you are talking about Concreto fists was a beast, regular Margarito was a skilless punching bag with a very good chin
Again, it's hard for me to imagine that plastered gloves can add so much if you don't already have the technical foundations underlying.
I'm sure getting hit with a hand wrapped with plaster-soaked wraps hurts a hell of a lot more than a regular wrapped hand, but I see your point, Margo skillwise was C level at best, he usually won because ultimately he was bigger and stronger than most of his opponents, and could usually take their punishment and dish out the same
Margarito did a lot of never been seen things, crushed a sparring partner's orbital with head gear on, made Cotto bleed from eye's and ears, exploded Lujan's ear etc. You gotta wonder how one does all this, then he gets caught with plaster...just don't know you don't say to yourself..."oh, that's how" That's on top of being demolished by an old Mosley in which he was favored 5-1 after being caught which is the first time we knew for sure he didn't have plaster.
the way he knocked Martinez down with that right hand showed me enough that he was using plaster, the moment he touched him Martinez almost went stiff body, the only time I have seen someone have the same reaction from a punch is when the puncher was wearing a knuckle duster. that being said you cant take away Margo's sweet punch resistance and relentless pressure style, still think he gives every WW/SWW of today a problem
pretty much this... the only elite thing he had was output and durability. his the kind of fighter you would hate to come up against when you are just starting out.. from experience i can tell you there is nothing worse then fighting someone who you can land on fairly regularly but just keep ****ing coming. its daunting as hell
