He was an excellent fighter in his prime. But he just sort of had a quick fall starting with the Honeyghan loss. There were weight problems he had at 147, Honeyghan beat him, and at 154, McCallum laid him out. Curry looked absolutely awesome though against a good undefeated titlist in Milton McCory. He also has 2 wins over the very good Marlon Starling, and a few other contenders of the time. He kept his elbows in tight to ward off shots, had a good mix of handspeed and power, threw short shots.
Curry said the best performance of his career was against one of my neighbours Colin Jones - in my aviator picture.
Excellent , pristine , the only ***** in his armor, was he and his brother would some time lose it mentally and had violent tempers out side the ring . Curry fought Lloyd, just after Curry lost his sister in a motor cycle accident and was in poor mental health going into that fight. Curry was never the same after that accident and the loss ..
excuse my spelling Colin was a pro boxer 26 wins 3 losses 1 draw (23 ko's) fought Milton McCory and Don Curry for the WBC and WBA world welterweight titles he started boxing training at the boxing club behind my back garden and he trained for the McCory and Curry fights behind my back garden in that old little ring and up in Eddie Thomas pro gym as well top fighter - could really bang - Curry retired him though right at his peak when he fought Colin unbeaten in 21 fights
Curry said he was not focused on the Honeyghan fight cos he had just met his missus and he wanted to be with her all the time - he was more intrested in being a lover not a fighter Bruce Curry is brother fought Thomas Hearns yes
Curry had a missus - he met her before he fought Lloyd Honeyghan around that time - i never heard he was homosexual - he might be - probaly bull**** - last i heard of Curry in 1997 he was done on gun possession charges
I remember reading that. Reed said he really did want to ask Curry about his preference in men or women.
Great interview. I never got the Leonard/ Trainer rumour, it was supposed to be that Leonard wanted to fight Hagler and didn't want Curry at 160 taking the fight. It doesn't make sense because as soon as Leonard said he wanted to fight Hagler it didn't matter a damn who else was at 160, he was going to get the fight. Hell, even Hagler-Hearns II got shoved aside without a second thought for it!!
He's not gay in fact he was engaged but his sister did die in a motor cycle accident a week or two before his fight with Lloyd , Im not sure about the missus story ..
