Just how good was Vernon Forrest?

i thought he was unlucky in the 1st fight with mayorga.

the ref waved a finger in front of him and just waved it. atsch

he was outboxing mayorga until he got tagged.

 

What?

Gamboa is very good but doesn't even have the potential to become as good as Mosley was at 135.

 

Forrest in his prime was a very solid welterweight, and rightfully holds his own in fantasy match-ups with anyone at the weight since the late 70's/early 80's Fab Four (the ww version; with Benitez subbed in for Hagler).

 

mosley was damn good at lightweight.

but his defences weren't great.

it was a mediocre period for the lightweights.

never unified or got to fight floyd at the time. :-(

 

He was like a less talented, more technically correct Tommy Hearns. Height, reach, quality movement, jab, right hand, hook and uppercut. He put it all together nicely.

His record speaks for itself.

Notes:
- I don't find the Quartey find as controversial as others. I consider it a win.
- I had the second find even, maybe even a point his way, but I knew before they read the cards that he had lost because he did great but couldnt overcome the demons from the first fight. It's sad because technically he is light years ahead of Mayorga but thats the beauty of intangiables in boxing.

PS - you know someone is good when they can come back off of a serious elbow injury and not look in the shape they once were and still perform to dominate Baldomir, beat Quartey and avenge Mora while being a solid champ.

 

yeah, he was one of those champs who looked incredible but wasn't fighting any fighters that would etch a legacy in stone.

 

I maintain he would have given Floyd fits at welterweight. The one that boxed Shane.

 

Slip really thinks Forrest is a bad matchup for Floyd, don't ya' Slip? Slip?

Well if DLH could mess floyd up with a jab then Forrest certainly could as well.

Forrest deserves respect for dethroning the p4p no1 at the time and proving it was no fluke in a rematch.

Mayorga was a tough style match up and the ko loss was clearly in his head in the rematch...still was very close.

Shame he didnt have that layoff otherwise we could have seen him in the mix with DLH, Winky, Trinidad and Vargas or even Floyd.

Still when he did come back he proved his quality once more even at a fairly advanced age.

Forrest seemed sporadically deadly. But as I say, he sometimes seemed lackadaisical, maybe fully focused he's as savage as he is in the first Mosley fight :deal

 

I thought Forrest was class in his prime, always liked watching him. Lateral movement obviously wasn;t his thing, but a class boxer nonetheless, fine sharpshooter

 

Vastly overrated.

No world class boxer should ever lose to Mayorga, let alone Mora.

 

very true, he is not an atg, it must be said, but he was class

 

Mora also drew with Shane. But, is still am absolute ****. "Mayorga is the most willing punchbag in the sport" He was up on 2 judges cards going into the 12th with Shane too.
