He lost a few to guys with tons of firepower to match his own (Contreras and Avelar) and of course he got old like all fighters do... but just how good was Vasquez in his prime? Anyone remember how he was thought of in his own time? Certainly not a fighter afraid to travel... or come back from a hard loss. He had to rebuild his career more than once. Seemed to pack quite a punch as well, though I'm not sure how much of that is due to the relatively low level of some of his defense competition. Fights like Ricardo Lopez and the Galaxy brothers suffered from similar situations.
Actually Wildredo Vazquez senior was a very good fighter. He had an exciting style, would fight anybody, and had good power. His win over Canizales is impressive. And late in his career, his come from behind knockout of Eloy Rojas to pick up another title was awesome. Not sure if he is hall of fame worthy. But, he is close. I always enjoyed watching him fight. (WV Jr. , much like JCC Jr, just didn't have the same stuff)
