Monday, June 2 2008 A complaint by heavyweight Danny Williams has prompted the British Boxing Board of Control to look into the circumstances of Williams' fight against Konstantin Airich that took place last Friday in Bilbao, Spain. Williams survived three knockdowns to win the bout by seventh round TKO, but claims the odds were unfairly stacked against him, citing multiple point deductions by Spanish referee Alfredo Garcia Perez, as well as the bell inexplicably ringing midway through round six when Williams had Airich in trouble. The BBBC's general secretary Simon Block is awaiting a video of the fight. "I am very concerned," Block told PA Sport. "I won't hesitate to take action if it is deemed appropriate."
3 Knockdowns? Why does Fightnews keep posting outright lies? I wish the biggest and best news site for boxing could atleast have some integrity and balls.
Also just read about this but on a different site which includes comments from Danny. Unfortunately, I doubt anything will happen. WILLIAMS LODGES COMPLAINT By Mark Staniforth, PA Sport Danny Williams will urge the British Boxing Board of Control to take action over the controversial circumstances surrounding his victory over Konstantin Airich in Bilbao on Friday night. Williams scored a dramatic seventh-round stoppage success despite being knocked down three times and having at least three points deducted by Spanish referee Alfredo Garcia Perez for unclear offences. Williams recovered and had Germany's Airich in trouble in the sixth only for the bell to ring prematurely. Television replays clearly showed the round ended over 90 seconds early, implying outside interference. Williams said: "It was incredible. There were rounds ending early and I lost count of the number of points I had taken away. I knew I had absolutely no chance of winning the fight unless I stopped the guy." In the latest chapter of his remarkable career, Williams, who famously knocked out Mike Tyson in 2004, did just that, piling on the pressure until the towel came in from the Airich corner. Williams added: "The whole situation is ridiculous. It also happened in my last fight against Oleg Platov in December, when they knew I was going to win so they stopped the fight on an injury and got a no-decision. "I've got to urge the British Board of Control to put in a complaint because things have got to change. I had even been warned beforehand by friends not to take the fight because I couldn't win it. "But I thought boxing was supposed to be about how good you are, not about where you are fighting or who you are fighting for. I need to stand up over this to make sure other British fighters don't have the same problems I have had." The British Boxing Board of Control's general secretary Simon Block said he was awaiting a video of the contest with interest. "I am very concerned," Block said. "I won't hesitate to take action if it is deemed appropriate." Williams had accepted the fight despite already being scheduled to defend his British title against John McDermott in Dagenham early next month. With victory, he also handed hot prospect Airich his first professional defeat. Williams said: "I took the fight because Airich didn't look too good on the videos. But I couldn't believe how hard he punched. His power was up there on a level with Vitali Klitschko." Williams, decked twice in the third round and once in the fourth, added: "I wasn't mentally prepared for that kind of power. But I got used to it, and everything that was going on just spurred me on to get the win."
Usually a BBBC member is in attendance at all fights involving a British boxer, but it is good to see Simon Block making it his personal duty to investigate the matter, as opposed to getting involved in the gunslinging between Jon Thaxton/Mick Hennessy and Amir Khan/Frank Warren. Basically, this must be stopped on the continent, you had Colin Lynes being sawn off in his fight against Branco recently, and now this has happened twice to Danny Williams recently - the mainland Europeans do tend to gang up on Brit/Yank fighters, it does seem strange that there is one common factor between this incident and any number of Sven Ottke robberies, Judge Manuel Maritxalar. I know GPB are moaning about losing a few controversial fights Stateside, but none of those could compare to this. An absolute ****ing disgrace.
To be honest, he did land... but it GRAZED him... it was definetly a slip or a loss of equilibrium due to the graze. I don't know if you can count this as a KD though.:blood
Sawn off Generally a cricketing term, being given out LBW when the umpire sees six stumps instead of the usual three for example, or adjudged run out when clearly in. Or something like that - can be applied to judging of boxing matches, or dodgy red/yellow cards in football. Back to the previous post, if the glove makes contact and the fighter goes to the canvas, for me it is a KD. See round 8 of Benn Eubank I for an example!
The judging of the Branco/Lynes fight was fine imo. All of the scorecards were in a realistic range, I scored it a draw but could see any of the scores given. Even the Sky Sports commentators didn't score it for Lynes.
I hope something is done; this fight was a ****ing circus and just shows why boxing is the most corrupt sport on the planet
I had Lynes winning 115-112 - the only possible criticism is that he was a little lazy in the latter rounds having bossed the majority of the earlier part of the fight in my opinion. Big shame for Lynes, might have been on the verge of something decent.
Good, they need to take notice of this. Myabe they can ban him from porudcing in the British territory.
