I wouldnt bother with him, he tried to convince me that Harry Greb's record was full of bums, and that Calzaghe's record was better

Don't tell me this muppet has flicked through some incomplete records and deemed the guy worthless?

I'd love to hear madmanc back up his claim that these fighters were bums.

Wildes opponents records were not recorded as well as lots of Wildes fights, the only Flyweight records recorded were often championship bouts, therefore if Wilde fought somebody with a record of 4 wins 2 defeats, that was often their championship record, that boxers overall record could well be 104 wins and only 2 defeats.

Acknowledging Jimmy Wildes greatness does not diminish Mannys achievments at all - calm down man , there were ATG's well before HBO and Toprank came along.

In his other thread, he said Greb's record was full of bums, and that Calzaghe had a better resume. Sums it up

I don't know as much about Jimmy Wilde as I would like. Could you tell me what his best 10 wins are? From a quick bit of boxrec warrior-ing (yes, that's all I have time for right now!), he does appear to have an extremely padded record. While winning 90+ fights in a row sounds impressive, I'm not convinced of the level of opposition. Is there any footage of his earlier fights so that we can actually determine how good they were? (I will search myself when I get home)

On paper (admittedly incomplete records I assume), his record looks very padded. Based on that, they appear to be the types of opponents that would be labeled 'bums' by today's ESB'ers, and modern fighters wouldn't be allowed to fight more than a few before they started to be berated for their terrible opposition. I don't want to write off anyone elses opinions, especially those of respected boxing historians, but I'm always reticent to get caught up in nostalgia...so video has to carry a lot of weight. One thing in Wilde's favour is that he appears to have a relatively complete record, which must imply people were interested in him (or are now, and compiled it over time). However, if his opponents were that good, perhaps we should be expecting them to have more complete records too?

This is ludacris, I have heard people claim that this guy is the hardest puncher p4p ever.

Sure he wasnt feather fisted and he apparently had a decent skill level. (not sure if there is any tape of him) this guy used to beat up cab drivers and pub bouncers many of which appeared to be finsihing their night shift when entering the ring.

Is that definitely true? On what evidence is that based? I'm prepared to accept it if that can be shown to be the case.

I don't want to be that guy but... you don't know what you are talking about. Guys walked around with losses in that era. It's just the way it was. No one was protected like they are now. The facination with unbeaten records strarted largely with Joe Louis and we would be better off if he lost his first fight like bhop.

That might explain why a lot of the fighters where 0-1-0 just to get that 0 out f the way quick
