..it used to be in the drop down menu at the end.. Little things like that are starting to mean that boxing is starting, ever so slightly, to be semi-mainstream again. Discuss.
EliteXC is going out of business, that is very good for boxing. But lets face it, even before UFC, boxing was suffering(see RJJ days). Its getting better, but theres a lot of catching to do if we want to go back to the days of Leonard,Duran,Hearns,Hagler. Some good HW would help though.
the boxing tab has been up there like that for about a year i think, definetly a good sign however. I have slowly seen my friends gaining a bit of interest in boxing after years of not caring about it at all.
EliteXC was a farce. Boxing has been here fore 100 years, it will be for 100 more. We will always have our hardcore fans, and it will have its ups and downs, but no matter what, the sport will continue to be great.
It sure is/was. Total joke run by fools. Very true. MMA kind of reminded people how much they like the martial arts (including boxing). And if people really want to 'come home' to the most longstanding and professional of the martial arts (at least in the USA and Europe), they watch boxing. Right now the whole world is going through economic turmoil, nowhere more so than the USA. I don't want to say this the wrong way, because I'm a very proud American, but our world dominance is slipping. When things get a little bit tough for a region/nation/civilization, oftentimes that is when people will turn more towards entertainment/distraction. The Romans started the whole Coliseum thing, I think, when things were going badly (moving from Republic to Empire). And it was a huge success. It gave people a place to go and let their anger out or whatever. This is the same kind of thing Obama was talking about with his "Bitter Clinger" comment -- when times are tough, people go with what they know. Well, there's nothing more basic than 2 people scrapping. Just ask Cain and Abel. I think boxing will continue its American resurgence and I'm glad to have it back, on ESPN or wherever. I miss the "Tuesday Night Fights" days of USA Network, when Fat George Foreman was blowing up guys like Steve Zouski. :good
Meh. I love boxing but just can't be bothered with most MMA (although the Pride fighting was pretty good cause it was a lot of striking.) It is packaged too much like WWE for my tastes and it is a lot less entertaining to me. Not to take anything away from the athletes or anything, but all the wrestling is boring to me. People are free to like what they like, but MMA is just not my cup of whiskey.
I love MMA. I wasn't trying to dis it, just saying how I could see some of the people who had never watched either MMA or boxing eventually coming to boxing, too.
That's the huge mistake Elite XC made, building a promotion around a guy who can't fight and who was just exposed for the world to see. If you do that, and your top guy loses to a replacement in 14 seconds, all your credibility is gone. I'm not a huge UFC fan, either. I like the product but can't stand Dana White. I'm glad Affliction is starting to run shows.
I think White is a ***** myself but I kinda wish he was running boxing... He's done some really good things with the promotion of UFC. I would love for boxing to become more popular; not to vindicate myself for liking it or anything, just to encourage more top-level athletes to get into it so I can watch more entertaining fighters (yeah, selfish...).
Dana has done some things, it's true. My problem with him is that he tries to insert himself in everything, like the McMahons do in WWE. It's not about him or how tough he thinks he is, it's about the fighters. It's like he wants to be the lead actor in the show or whatever.
Probably, but not THAT long.. at one time it was in the "other" drop down menu. It's just I was thinking about it today, that it has it's own tab. That and they are actually mentioning fights on Sportscenter these days.
Yes. '07 and '08 have been filled with big fights. If boxing promoters continue this trend, boxing will remain a popular sport. That said, it will never again be as popular as baseball or football.
Because a lot of us would like to see boxing get into the popularity it once had and for it to be more popular than UFC since we prefer boxing over MMA, though I'm slowly getting into MMA.
