At least I lucked out over here for a change, HBO called it pretty much spot on, although was going over the top just a little. I paid 54 dollars for the PPV, so I'd have been fully enraged if I had to deal with a robbery and shitty commentary.:cursing:

I couldn't believe how poor (probably biased rather) the sky commentary team were. Kovalev landed some good shots that weren't just taken on the gloves and arms but they just refused to comment until the replays showed a couple of them (which they had no control over) so were forced to say something but even then it was a quick brush-off acknowledgement.

Once Ward came back into the fight they just stopped watching Kovalev and it was the Andre Ward show as far as Sky were concerned.
Paulie has gone down a notch in my opinion of him, Macklin has always been a **** commentator imo but still better than Paul Smith.
Tony Bellew and Dave Coldwell should be commentating on every fight! They call it how it is and have the best analytical skills

It was an awesome fight, no doubt about it. I still maintain Kovalev won the 10th round (razor close round though,) with Ward winning the 11th and 12th.

Anyway, for those clamoring that Kovalev got the short end of the stick, I can understand why. Ward looked like the beaten up fighter at the end of it and Kovalev was awarded an extra point with the KD. When you factor in the idea that you need to beat the champ convincingly to win the title, than I could understand the anger with the controversial decision.

I still think Ward won it by 1 point. It was Kovalev's fight to win but his stamina issues (something I never knew he had,) were quite evident in the back half of the fight. Maybe if he trains full time in big bear before his rematch, that might help his stamina issues and allow him to finish his fights off with a decent amount left in his tank.

A voice of reason, and I respect the way you viewed the fight 2nd time round. A case can be made for either fighter winning but there is no case for claiming it was a robbery, as some still do.

I agree with all you say apart from one thing. I don't think the challenger needs to 'beat the champ convincingly to win the title', that shouldn't come into it, otherwise we are asking judges to slant their scoring in favour of one boxer over another. In my view, judges should score the fight as objectively as possible and only on what takes place in the ring...

Most ppl are easier influenced ,its just a form of brain washing really. If you were tied to a chair and repeadily told the sky was actually purple in a convincing matter over time you would start to question reality and see a purple sky in your head. lol
However the more logical person would never give in to such absurdity but when you really are engaged in watching a fight and the announcers portray or inflate another over the other it could and does play tricks that subconsciously have you seeing what they are saying. Me myself i simply just turn sound off block off the idiocy and view it without any subliminal referancing before claiming who i think won.

Woah, I think Kovalev won round 3 :O
I originally had it a convincing round for Ward watching the HBO broadcast.
Round 3 starts at 10:17 EDIT: watch it with the sound off

Essentially, round 3, 6, 10 and 12 could've gone either way (I think round 3 is more convincing for Kovalev now). He was the better ring general, landed harder shots overall, and more jabs.

He should've threw some jabs to the body throughout the fight, though, he was headhunting a hell of a lot.

I try to reset after every round. I think another tendency people have is to try and give a round to the losing fighter, but did they actually do enough to win the round or did they only do better relatively to how they performed in the previous round(s)?

In my mind with this comment especially is round 3, as a counter to some of the points you made as to why one might favour Kovalev, the above tendency can also cause some to favour Ward. It's a swing round with no correct answer, BTW, but these are things to keep in mind.

    Judging fights is difficult.

(For anyone interested, I gave Ward rounds 5,7,8,9,11,12.)

Watching it on Saturday evening I scored it 115-112 kovalev watching it the second time. I really had Ward winning one round clearly after that they were pretty close Kovolev won the 12th. kept his back to the center of the ring landed more and tied Ward up and actually Ward tried to tie Kovolev up through out the entire fight, very little boxing. Kovolev is still the undefeated champion and rematch should be held in Germany, r Russia or Kansas City

I'll address this post later, but if you had it 117-110 live, your scoring is already suspect in my eyes.

I had it Kov by 2 possibly 3.

As for the Sky commentary team, all i'll say is one of my favourite analysts ( Paulie ) talked absolute and utter crap for most of the last 10 rounds.

    I had rounds 1, 3, 6, 10 as swing rounds. Kov gets 2 points for round 2.

    So I scored Dre winning 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12. Giving him only the third as a swing round.

Why? I believe after the 5th round Kov was gassed, he was missing a lot more and holding on the inside. Unless you have very trained eyes, you can't see all the body work that Ward was doing. If the fight continued the way it was for the first 2 rounds, with Dre coming out cold, Kov wins going away. I think to score the fight for Kov you have to discount Ward's defense, ring generalship and EFFECTIVE aggression. Also, Ward did almost all of his work to the body--so if you're not close enough to see, or if you're not looking for it, you'd miss it. Anyway I had Ward 114-113, swing a round here or there and Kov wins. Not a robbery, a close, very good fight, where we will be seeing the rematch next June.

Just a FYI for y'all if the fight wasn't close and Ward won, he was going to call out Stevenson to fight for the WBC.
