Just re-watched Calzaghe Vs Roy Jones Jr

  1. Now i'm a big Calzaghe fan and think he gets some pretty bad stick undeservedly on this forum, but watching this fight just made me realise how far Roy Jones had declined by this point. This was clear especially after watching the Telesco fight yesterday.
Even just 2 minutes into the first round he was looking sluggish and his reflexes were way off compared to before and i don't consider it a good win for Calzaghe.
Anyway, after watching it I have come to a conclusion as to why some fighters age well (Hopkins) and some don't (Old RoyJJ).
The thing is, some experienced and very skilled boxers can go on and remain sucessful because they rely on their pure boxing ability and experience without having to rely on actual attributes like speed, power etc... which they lose with age.
The difference with a boxer like Roy Jones is that at his peak, he wasn't a technical boxer in the traditional sense, but what he had was freakish speed, reflexes, power and agility. But what you see is that when he has aged and lost these attributes, what is left is average boxing skills and a failure to adapt his game.
He was always a boxer who would devestate in his prime but wouldn't last with age. I don't know if i'd agree his chin was always questionable but it certainly isn't strong on enough to maintain his old style these days.
Purely my opinion and i thought it was interesting. So i'm sharing whether you like it or not!

A Calzaghe fan admitting the glaringly obvious truth that Jones was shot to smithereens?!

I never thought I'd live to see the day. If only some of your fellow Calzaghe men on this forum had a fraction of your objectivity, the world would be an infinitely better place.

If you watch the man in this fight, and think it's the same calibre as the one in the Calzaghe fight, your perceptive abilities are flawed, to say the least.

Why do some boxers decline badly and some well?

Those who declined badly and why...

Ricky Hatton - Fluctuation in weight, binge drinking, too many wars
RJJ - Moving up to heavyweight and back down again

Those who did well later in there carrears

Hopkins - Consumate professional, lives well, not been in many wars
Mayweather - consumate professional, lives well, not been in any wars
    Pacquiao - PED's

To be fair it was a shot Roy Jones but not a completely shot fighter. He still had plenty in the tank, this was proved against Lacy and Sheika. Even against Lebedev he put on a respectable performance until the KO.

Like I said: a 'shot Roy Jones' but not a completely shot fighter.

  8. I agree with most of that bar Pacquiao (I believe in innocent until proven guilty) however I think it's more than that.
However more than that, depending on how you box, some techniques will last with age and some won't. RJJ was all power and speed and that won't.
Did Ricky Hatton really decline badly? I think he's a great boxer who gets too easily dismissed for his losses which lets not forget came against probably the two greatest fighters active today.

  9. I honestly think Lacy made RJJ look good. I think he is shot and was shot even then.

Really? I think all Calzaghe fans say that RJJ was shot too fook and adds nothing to his resume. Hopkins is another story tho, I think Hopkins recent wins etc has a better impact on Calzaghe's resume.

some truth in there, jones relied on athleticism, not technical boxing skills. once his athleticism was in decline, we got to see what his chin was like, what his ability to adapt was like, what his ability to fight in adversity was like.

you was impressed with jones against telesco, what did you think to jones' performance v lacy?

The Lacy beat down was as bad as Calzaghes. Even worse. And that was shot RJJ.
Losing a lot of muscle, draining yourself and then getting KO´d twice in a row. He should have retired or taken a long break.

Ricky lost to the two greatest fighters of our era, in much the same way as the other Hitman Tommy Hearns

His carear wasn't going to be a long one because he liked a drink and lots of food. Thats what made him endearing to the British public though. Years of abusing his body took its toll. In the Mayweather fight, had he been in the same shape as the Tyuzu fight he would have taken those shots but got knocked out by not a very hard hitter. He blamed the loss on the Ref

The Lazcano fight confirmed my fears as he was out on his feet during the 10th, if it wasn't for the shoe lace he would have been stopped by Lazcano. He blamed his performance on the Flu

Malignaggi I dont count as he cant punch with power and made Ricky look invincible, Pacquiao I think is juiced up and caught Ricky with a huge shot, has he not abused his body, he may have been able to take it

jones must have really fancied the calzaghe fight. he'd stabalized his weight, got back on a roll by beating ajamu, hanshaw, and trinidad.

he then knew that he was

    - fighting at home
    - taking a fighter on who had only ever had one fight at light heavy
    - was fighting a fighter who had become feather fisted with notorious hand trouble
    - was fighting a man who was also ageing at 36

i think jones really fancied this fight because he knew that the opponents power would not be a factor during the fight, that the fight would be a test of skills.
