Just re-watched Calzaghe Vs Roy Jones Jr

Hes been shot for some time now. I agree with pretty much everything you said except that Roy had average skills. He had very good skills to his credit and could box well technically as he showed vs Ruiz. Very few old fighters that had as long a career as Jones can adapt and be sucessful though. All those amatuer fights, pro fights, and years of playing ball and weight fluctuation really burned his body out. Even if he adaptee his style, his legs would still be gone.

 

That's true. Roy was so past it by that point, that Calz can't brag about that win much.

Still, 50% of Roy is better than 100% of a lot of fighters...but it wasn't like slaying the dragon that Roy once was. It was more like beating the 80's version of Ali instead of the 60's version.

As for the aging goes, you are right.

Fighters who get by on pure athleticism and reflexes of course will go downhill faster than those getting by on technical ability.

They say the first thing to go is the legs and the last thing to go is power.

Fighters like RJJ, Whitaker, Ali, SRL, Tyson are going to age worse than someone like...Hopkins, Foreman, Tua, JMM, Wlad.

 

No it wouldn't. Only someone who is completely obsessed with Calzaghe (like you) would come out with such a statement.

There's a reason Calzaghe turned him down when he was in his prime.

 

Jones had PLENTY of time to adjust back to the weight. He started getting hit on his Glass Jaw and getting KOed. Simple as that. Jones has no Chin. None. And never did.
