Great fight stopped at the right point. Lewis finished his HW career showing heart, chin, courage, power against a guy who'd be a handful for any HW in history.
Agreed. I think Vitali also took the fight on short notice and would have spent even more time preparing for LL's style, which might make up for LL being in better shape facing VK with more notice. BUT, back then people did not think very highly of Vitali after the debacle in which he retired from a shoulder injury. So it's possible LL would have not trained properly even if he knew VK was the opponent. (Of course that would not have been the case in any rematch.) Great exciting heavyweight brawl of a kind you don't see any more today in championship fights. The main reason is that there is no one around like Lewis that is big enough and skilled enough to fight either brother. Against one another the "contenders" of today sometimes have good contests. It's just that none of them are big/good enough to take the fight to either brother.
