It's a lot less opinionated than simply stating "Leonard outlanded Hagler significantly" which is the view I was responding to. I would never rely on punch stats to decide a fight, and wasn't trying to. However, these punch stats clearly indicate that neither of the combatants "outlanded" the other "significantly", which is what I was pointing out.

I watched the fight live, and at the time thought Hagler won, even though he threw away the first 2 rounds by fighting orthodox.

What's crucial here is understanding what a point scoring punch is. Yes, Leonard threw a few more punches, but alot hit Hagler's gloves. He also held alot more which Richard Steele warned him about on numerous occasions. But when holding, Hagler was throwing short, tapping punches to the body - these are scoring punches.

I've just watched the fight again and rescored it. Yes, Leonard was superb and yes it was a close fight. But I had Hagler by 2 rounds - and even then when I went back over to give Leonard the benefit of the doubt in the rounds that I scored as a draw, Hagler still won the fight by 1 round.

Finally, to add more weight to the Hagler argument, whilst the law is woolly, Judges (particularly in America) usually score more favourably to the aggressor. To say Leonard ran in some of those rounds is an understatement.

I could never score it for Hagler. Always ended up no worse than 7-5 SRL. Multiple viewings never changed it.

Hagler frapped up and gave the first 4 rounds away, so in a 12 round fight, your opponent (SRL) only has to find a way to win 3 more rounds (and SRL was a master in doing that).

Hagler gave the first 2, but when he switched to southpaw in Round 3 he began picking up alot more points. This notion that he gave the first 4 rounds to Leonard I don't get.

    http://sonahrsports.com/haglerleonard-years-of-controversy-p82-128.htm
    The scorecards were announced:
“Judge Lou Filippo: 115-113 for Hagler!”
    Cheers from the crowd.
“Judge Dave Moretti: 115-113 for Leonard!”
More cheers from the crowd. This was going to be either a split decision or a draw.
“Judge Jose Juan Guerra: 118-110 for … Leonard!”
Gasps. Cheers. Boos. Cries of “What the – !”

The arguments started then, and they continue to this day. Even those who thought Leonard won were baffled by Guerra’s one-sided scoring. Had Guerra made his margin two points, as did his fellow judges, the decision would still have been debatable, but not to the extent that it was then and remains to this day.

My take on the outcome is the same now as it was twenty-five years ago: Leonard won it. In frittering away the first four rounds, Hagler created a deep hole for himself. To pull out a decision, Marvin needed to take seven of the next eight rounds. Or win six, with one to Leonard and the other even. Or score a knockdown. Or score a 10-8 round without putting Leonard on the canvas.

Or knock Leonard the hell out and render all those calculations irrelevant.

Just looking at Lou Fillipo's card, that's pretty much exactly how I scored the fight. Spent a good 2 hours rerunning round after round last night.

The point scoring punches were the only punches that mattered. Leonard was very convincing with his quick hands and showboating, but from what I saw at the time, and what I analysed last night, he simply didn't connect with more scoring punches in the fight.

I had for it for Hagler then, just as I do now.
