First, I'd like to say I'm a huge fan of Cotto. I'm not hugely impressed by Hatton.

Contrary to what most Floyd fans would like to think, there is no way in hell that Floyd gives to any of these 2 fighters the way he did Gatti.

Here are some reasons.

If you watched the fight carefully, you will have noticed....

1) Gatti was incredibly slow
2) He could not cut off the ring to save his life. He had absolutely no bounce in his step and mostly stepped to the right with his left hand down.
3) He kept his left hand down the entire fight, which ultimately led to being caught by 1000 right hands.
4) He was not willing to press the action and engage.

Now, most Floyd fans, or moreso Cotto haters have this incredible misconception that Cotto is some super slow fighter who couldn't catch a turtle. Any true unbiased boxing fan can easily see that Cotto makes up for his lack of footspeed with more than average hand speed. More importantly, Cotto probably cuts off the ring better than anyone else in the game right now. He ALWAYS gets his opponents where he wants them despite their so called speed advantages. With that said, Cotto is superior to Gatti in every speed category there is, whether it be hand or footspeed, not to mention his ability to cut off the ring once again. Also, while Cotto has been known to not have the best defense, his defense is still far superior to Gatti's defense. Here's the biggest reason I say this. What boxer is dumb enough to stand in front of floyd within punching distance with his hands down. Gatti did this the entire fight knowing how fast Floyd's hands are. You will never see Cotto in his opponents face with his hands down. If you've watched Cotto's fights, you will notice that his defense isnt really all that bad, he just has been caught in exchanges mostly. But again, his defense is miles above the defense Gatti showed in that fight. The most important aspect is Gatti's unwllingness to engage. I know I dont need to go into detail here, but we all know Cotto will do nothing but engage. Cotto is one of the best today at being effectively aggressive, which is key to defeating a fighter like Floyd.

While I do not believe Hatton is as good as Cotto, I do believe he too will make a much better showing than Gatti did. Hatton has great footspeed and quick hands. He does very well and bouncing in and out of punching distance when he fights. His problem is that rather than continuing exchanges, he has lately been holding a great deal. If he lets his hands go more, his style would much better IMO. Hatton is also more willing to engage his opponents. Once again, it's not the best type of engaging, due to the excessive holding, but it's a lot more than Gatti tried. But b/c Hatton does like to hold on the inside, this may benefit him b/c he may be able to connect going inside and before Mayweather can counter, he will be holding him. Like Cotto, Hatton doesnt have the best defense, but he rarely is seen with his hands down, especially when he lunges in.

In the end, I do not think Hatton will beat Mayweather, but I do think he will put up a much better fight than Gatti did. I do believe Cotto can beat mayweather b/c he has the overall strength and skillset to get on the inside.

Hatton's defence is getting inside and clinching, then firing off to the body with the hooks, providing opening then to the head with uppercuts or that sweet left to the head he throws. Hatton cuts the distance down and gets in close precisely so he doesn't get picked off at distance due to his short reach. It's a form of defence different to having a high guard.

Hatton actually has pretty good defense. It's pretty subtle, but if you notice he weaves his head and body a bit to slip punches and counter/move inside. He's got a lot of skills.

People confuse defense sometimes with only keeping your hands up or blocking punches and tend to forget it also includes weaving and steping in and out of punches. I believe hatton's defense is the latter.

gatti knew he was goin to lose,watch his expression on the way to the ring,he didnt believe he cud win(sadly)the day b4 the fight he asked ricky hatton how would he fight mayweather?! he had no confidence,hatton&cotto wud be the exact opposite they'd go in fully expecting to win by any means neccasarry,not many people are but im going for hatton to pull off the upset in december

i would love to see mayweather lose. i dont think hatton will be the one to beat him, but i'd love to see it happen.
