I think that night everyone expected Garcia to get beat up so badly that it created this myth that he destroyed Lucas. Go back and watch it again, fight is incredibly close.
Destroyed is a stretch but, he was beaten up pretty good. And when people compare that to what they thought was going to happen they label it a destruction because Lucas got far, far worse then what they thought he was going to. Even now you have to wonder how much damage Lucas actually did take in that fight as he had a fair amount trouble with fighters he would've previously been thought to destroy with no trouble at all. Also, close does not mean a fighter can't take plenty of punishment, we have seen many close fights that have had lasting effects on fighters.
Competitive? Yes. It wasnt exactly close though. You couldnt make any argument for Matthyse winning that fight.
:deal this.. and i was rooting for matthyse, garcia made me a fan that day (and then lost me when he fought rod salka)
The fight was decided on the 3 point KD swing in the 11th. Lucas was clearly winning the round and had won by 2 judge single point SD on the scorecards if it hadn't happened. It was a very close fight and warranted a rematch wich never came.
impressive enough to get a close but clear decision against a guy i and majority of voters thought he would lose to? proving me wrong and making me eat my words was impressive
First 4 rounds - both more tentative than you've seen them in any of their fights By round 6 - 3 rounds a piece on most scorecards Round 6-7? Lucas's eye closes from a swipe & Garcia slowly takes control... wins by 3 to 5 rounds depending how you judge it... lots of Danny lowblows as well... Not like Danny is leagues ahead...he's not...and his recent performances have been sht..
It was a close SD fight decided on the KD. Had there been no KD in a round Matthyse was winning the decision would have gone in Matthyse's favor. All the Matthyse fans were out in force before the fight, but Garcia fans won bragging rights thus it was a "dominant" victory and Matthyse fans went into hiding. Had it gone in Matthyse's favor it would have been a "dominant" victory and they would have rubbed it in the faces of Garcia fans. The fight was as close as it comes and I wasn't rooting for either side. I'd be happy to watch a thrillogy with these two.
