I was a Leonard fan but a bigger Hagler fan, I really expected Hagler to win big but was disappointed that he did not do more. The fight was close Ray did an awful lot of shoe shine. I think SRL and Angelo brought there bag of tricks and edged it but fight may have been very close, I have to watch again

    Yep. The art of shoeshining.

That certainly was never a part of Hagler's game. But both Marvin and the Petronelli's had to strongly suspect that'd be a major tactic employed by Leonard and Dundee.

Anyone who picked Hagler in this fight is a stupid mother ****er

    Just watched it again

The very best you can give to Marvin is 4 rounds

    That's being generous

    Hagler was shot

A prime Marvin in a smaller ring probably kos Leonard within 3 rounds

Marvin lost this because he got ****y

Leonard is one of the greatest of all time

As much as I dislike SRL I gotta agree with you: he won the fight fairly.

The only robbery happening was Hagler robbing himself his best chance to defeat Leonard for sleeping during the first few rounds.

Leonard had a smart gameplan, Marvin didn't. Therefore, Marvin can only blame himself for losing that fight.

Really appreciate the insight guys, thank you...

I wasn't born when this fight took place so wasn't fortunate enough to be able to get caught up in the pre-fight buzz, but I find it one of the most intriguing of all mega fights in that there's a lot of debate on the outcome.

I do feel that if Hagler had started out at the gates with a bit more intent he may have edged it for me. SRL set to work with making the fight HIS style fight very early on though, so it was probably easier said than done...

I had it 6-5-1 Hagler. The scoring comes down to whatever floats your boat really. It wasn't a robbery though.

Yes,115-113 to Leonard has is also my score.

As has been said so many times,Leonard ran away with the first three or four rounds while Hagler started slowly.

Spot-on. Leonard crawled into Marv's head and got him to step out of character; Hagler felt the need to play Ray's game, hence giving away rounds 1 to 4. The overconfidence bled over into Marv's corner; a complete lack of urgency into the later rounds...as if they were having a board meeting; no fire when it was needed.

Since the night I saw it, Ray was the winner by a close but distinct margin....and I won\t even go into the fact how he masterfully stole the momentum of the event....long before the final bell.

I thought Leonard had won by about a round , but it was too close to call it a robbery whoever had won.
I did think Hagler's corner were far too laid back.

I´ve seen that fight probably 100 times by now but never, ever had I scored it for Hagler, Leonard fought clever, Hagler did some really stupid mistakes, aspecially in the earlier rounds.

Haven't watched it in a long while but in my younger days I watched the fight several times and never scored it for Hagler. I am a fan of both fighters, so have no dog in the fight.

This has been discussed ad infinitum, but over the years the reasons I have heard or offered why Hagler lost include: he was old and past-it, he overtrained, he was tight, Ray was too fast for him, Marvin struggled with smart counterpunchers, Ray's footwork was too good, Marvin underestimated him, Leonard paid money to obtain a larger ring, Leonard paid money to make it 12 instead of 15 rounds, Marvin started too slow, his corner did not urge him on enough or express enough urgency, and Marvin fought in the conventional stance too much when his best position was southpaw - with his power hand, the right, being in front and closer to the foe, who would not be as used to power punches coming from that position.

Hagler can have all those excuses but at the end of the day Leonard won. Marvin knew in advance it was a 12 rounder he knew it was a big ring. Leonard just outsmarted him.
Great as Marvin was if he was going to have a problem with someone it would be a smart boxer. I think with Hagler that he shone against fellas who came at him, fellas looking for a war, a small ring would make it even easier. Sometimes when you're a top fighter you've got to adapt.
Was Hagler shot? Well he was still the champ and Leonard had been out the ring how long? about 4 years and he'd never even boxed at middleweight. Hagler was a great fighter but I think he would of had problems with slicksters of the past maybe even fellas who never became champ rather than aggressive punchers looking for a shootout.

I've seen that at least 10 times... I thought Leonard won by close decision.
