They were little brown ,bottles in hard plastic, can't remember how much they were, but some of Minter's fans had been drinking for several hours. MInter had a small , nasty element of supporters along with some great fans. The jingoistic atsmosphere whipped up before hand didnt help,The Stars and Stripes was booed into the ring.Cheers for the Union Jack. There were cans as well but these were smuggled in, none were on sale in the foyer, and the glasses were flimsy plastic.
A blow-out.......... Hagler smoked Minter easy........... Minter was butchered by Hagler......... Minter never really in the fight........ I got a decent copy on tape......... SR.BILL:good
I've said this before but I think Minter could of give a better account of himself in this fight. Previous to this he'd been stopped on cuts due to his temperament of getting into a fight. For those of us that remember the time his biggest battle was with himself and his control with that thin skin of his.. He'd got all that under control, won the title against Antuofermo in a very disciplined performance, for him and then got carried away in the fight with Hagler and forgot what had got him there. In a fight like they had there was always gonna be an early ending, same as Hearns Hagler. It's a shame really that Minter is remembered and dismissed I think by a lot of boxing aficionado for this one fight. He was better than that. By the way, not saying that he could of beat Hagler but he was good enough to make it more interesting.
Leading up to the fight,Minter pulled a Bernard Hopkins and said,"No black man will ever take my title."
I thought a lot of Alan Minter but he fought the wrong fight vs Hagler...Minter went to war...I think Hearns made the same mistake but I loved both fights...Alan had fast hands and good boxing skills, power as well but he walked in and went toe to toe with Hagler...either way Minter had balls and Marvin was not going to mess up his 2nd chance at the crown.
Again, Minter was too stiff and upright for Hagler in 1980.......... Hagler hit Minter with the sink and soap bar within 3 rds.................. Minter is lucky they stopped the fight......... Hagler was pumped and psyched, and was not gonna be dicked around by any judges in Britain......... Hagler at his finest........ Hagler's reign was from 1980 to 1987......... 7 long yrs at the top of 160 pounds........ BUT! Hagler's real prime prolly ended in 1984 after he wasted Mustafa Hamsho in New York......... By '85, against Hearns, Hagler was already slipping.... Scary...... MR.BILL
Why do you think Hagler needed to worry about the judges? I think the impartiality displayed in fights concerning British fighters, in close fights with overseas opponents ,is rather better than the US can claim. Going back in my time to Dave Charnley's challenge for Joe Brown's title ,when many though Charnley had done enough to take the title. Brown rightly got the decision. Contrast that with one of Colin Jones challenges to McCrory. When he looked to have won . Lennox Lewis's challenge of Holyfield. First fight, fair decision do you think? For the record. The referee for the Hagler fight was Carlos Berrocal, and the judges were Marcello Bertini, and Jose Juan Guerra. ALL NEUTRAL. I think Hagler was more likely to not get a fair shake in his OWN COUNTRY, witness his first fight with Antuofermo, which I though he clearly won, only to get a draw,[ the ref and ALL three judges were from the US.] The crowd at the Minter fight were certainly biased, and disgraced themselves by booing the US flag and anthem, but the officiating was not.
That was a prime Hagler. Look at the difference in his hand and foot speed compared to the zombie that followed Ray Leonard around the ring years later. Leonard would never gotten into the ring with that Hagler. Minter was a hell of a fighter in his own right. A tough and talented s.o.b. He simply ran into an extremely motivated Hagler who was not going to repeat his safety first performance from Vito 1. That particular crowd was quite a nasty one, wasn't it? The first appearance of the drunked soccer crowds for many in the American audience. It's a marvel Hagler and his team were not seriously hurt. Terrible behavior.
minter was about 6ft i think and hagler had been listed as between 5-9 and 5-10. what isn't in dispute is that on that night hagler was frightening.i thought minter wobbled mmh at one stage but i could be wrong. on that form hagler would have wasted any middle ,ever
If I remember rightly [I havent watched the fight for some years] ,Minter momentarily halted Hagler with a good shot.
