Hagler only really got dicked ONCE by the judges, and that was back in '79 against Vito Ant....... Aside from that, I CANNOT state WTF happened in the earlier losses to "Watts and Monroe." However, Hagler cameback to beat them Mother-Duckers in rematches........ NO! Hagler was NOT robbed against Leonard in '87, Hagler was faded and too slow to catch-up to SRL....... And, since Ol' Minter was a tall 6' at 160 pounds and thought of as a hard puncher, this gives me a feeling that Hagler could've and would've tore apart Carlito Monzon as well, in a time machine........... BUT! I know goddamn well Minter was no Monzon.... I know that.... But still..... Had Hagler and Monzon fought in either 1973 or 1978, the fight would not be fair or accurate in their true abilities.............. Hagler was green in '73, and Monzon was aged by '78..... MR.BILL
Valid point about how Hagler handled tall guys ,as you say they weren't Monzon ,but still -------. I thought Leonard just won against Hagler too,but it was close. Hagler was clearly in decline, but his corner were woefully laidback, they should have been lighting a fire under his arse.
I definitely felt Hagler beat Watts in Philly. I thought he landed the cleaner shots and did a good job of slipping and ducking most of Watts's work. I'm not sure if the Monroe bout was filmed, but it has been described as a clear win for The Worm.
I've read Hagler accepted the loss to Monroe was fair but complained about his first loss to Watts. The last few rounds of that fight is on YouTube.
I do not have tapes of the losses to Watts or Monroe.... I have copies of the rematches......... YES! The Petronelli's, or how the hell they spell their name, were WAY TOO MELLOW in the corner for Hagler's loss to Leonard......... Come round 10, they still spoke like it was a 15 rounder............ I recall Gil Clancy stating that they need to get a little more emotional in there with Hagler............ On the other hand, Dundee was fine with Leonard...... MR.BILL
What Dundee did with Leonard was not to help Leonard but to work the judges. His job in that fight was to help create the illusion that Leonard was winning the rounds. Hagler's corner was always reserved. I think Hagler pretty much did what he thought he should in his fights. The Petronellis were there to fix him up when he was cut and to make suggestions. They probably didn't get excited in the Leonard fight because they were seeing what I was seeing: Hagler picking up round after round. It's funny, but Vito Antuofermo put on a much better show against Hagler than did Leonard in their first meeting and everybody pretty much agrees Hagler was robbed in the Antuofermo fight. The Petronellis weren't excited in that fight, either, even when Antuofermo was coming on like gang busters from the eighth on. I don't know if you have seen the first Antuofermo-Hagler fight, but it was definitely the toughest fight Hagler had at the championship level. No other fighter came closer to beating him in a championship fight than Vito. Antuofermo fought like a man possessed over the last half of the fight and was catching Hagler cleanly. Vito's punches had some effect on Hagler, as well, which suggests that Vito could punch when properly motivated (despite what his record shows). Hagler won the fight because of his early lead and by dominating many of the in the trenches exchanges.
I think the Hagler Leonard fight was too close to argue about myself. As to whether Antuofermo could punch well, he chinned a guy ringside at the Hagler Minter fight,Vito was doing colour commentary for CBS or whomever, and the guy became obnoxious, one punch from Vito settled things.
Hagler destroyed Full Obel, Alan Minter and Thomas Hearns. He had no trouble against tall fighters. I happen to like Marvin over Monzon.
I agree if anything he had comparatively more trouble against shorter guys , like Roldan,Antuofermo and Duran.
