First off, GREAT fight. Now, to the controversy. The referee and the deductions. For me the ref did warn Khan and obviously was not happy with the pushing/use of elbows pushing off. Now some refs might let this go, but this one wasn't, Khan should have been wise to this. Peterson himself wasn't bothered by it, and more bothered my Khan pushing his head down (which Khan claims Peterson was putting his head too low...) In terms of the fight I would have called it a draw in all honesty even without the points deductions. Taking emotion, hatred and the crowd out of the whole thing the fight was very even. Good work from both men - Peterson was cutting the ring off and working well inside, Khan showing great speed, combos and moving away from trouble. The aftermath interviews is just classic Khan, he doesn't take defeats well (who does?)...after Prescott nailed him he said he'd made "a little mistake"....... Great fight and I'd pay to see a rematch. GBP and Khan should apologise to Lamont and actually praise him as a competitor and a counterpart. Khan now has to face Bradley, Ortiz or rematch one of Maidana/Peterson - Khan wasn't destroyed here tonight, so he needs to face one of these guys and get back on the horse. Knowing the promoters though he will move up and probably fight someone who is shot at 147(hate to say it but Mosley?) or a weaker opponent (Randall Bailey? Matthew Hatton?!?!).
I agree to an extent. Sometimes your going to feel like the ref is on your case, you can either let it be a factor or get on with it. However i do feel the ref was awful. Yes the pushing was wrong, however i didnt think he broke the fighters up. They would be in a normal clinch and the ref was standing there and basically letting them sort it out themselves and when khan gave that little push to give him some space he'd warn him. As for the head holding, i did think peterson came in head first a bit to much and if the ref is not going to so much as say a word to peterson then your going to avoid that head by pushing it down. Dont get me wrong i think khan lost and peterson did amazing but the reffing was awful in my oppinion and was a factor
I was just gonna' say, putting Khan in with Bailey? LOL As Flea Man said, bigg risk and no reward, nobody outside of Hardcore fan's know who he is
Haha I know, was just throwing names out there at Welter...not sure what else he can do if he is adamant in moving up now? Would Golden Boy have Ortiz take him on straight away now at Welter? If he stays at Light-Welter he has Bradley, re-match with Maidana, re-match with Peterson or even Brook or Mitchell?
Amir needs to reel his neck in a bit and just respect the performance of Peterson. Yes, Khan put together some good work in the fight but ultimately he was bullied around that ring and never really halted Lamont's charge. Roach and Khan will get their rematch and they DO deserve it but all this 'cry-baby' stuff/butter wouldn't melt stuff is bull.
Khan has an uncanny "knack" of making fighters raise their game against him(Prescott/Peterson) he is always talking about his NEXT opponent, thats showing extreme arrogance, also as 1 poster said,he takes defeat really bad,he should at least give Peterson some credit.
Just putting the names out there, but was wondering WHO does Khan face if he is adamant in moving up? A "name" like Marquez, Margarito, Cotto or Mosley? It looks risky to me whoever he takes on at the moment while those guys still have a little bit of bite in them. It's weird but if Khan hangs about for a two or three years fighting bums he might become top of the welterweight division through everyone else retiring/being too old!
I think it could happen! Easy fight for Sky to hype, would get British interest through the Ricky Hatton factor alone. They would hype Matthew as durable and fighting for World Titles recently (not mentioning he got hammered!)....first fight at the welter level for Amir, and sets him up to face a Margarito or Mosley (who are well on the wane) in mid-late 2012.
Right we know its a pointless fight, probably just as pointless as Mc Closkey,or Matty Hatton as the previous posters mentioned, fight Prescott Khan get some ****ing fans behind you for avenging your loss, its gonna haunt you forever unless.
I agree about the deductions Chubble, I don't think many pro refs would have given then but seeing as this ref clearly WAS going to give them Khan should have played it smarter.
I just rewatched as well. Last night I had it 113-112 Khan, but today I had it 113-112 Peterson, with round 10 being the swing round. My thoughts: Perhaps I am being unfair, but Khan reminds me of Theo Walcott. He is all speed with very poor technique. His inside game is absolutely atrocious, his footwork is just as clumsy. He is good on the outside, but throws cuffing blows all night. Peterson hit him with the cleaner punches all night, was pressuring Khan, and caused him to foul all night long. I don't have a problem with the 1st point off, the second was harsh, but the ref kept warning him all night. Plus, the KD in the first was probably a slip as well, so it evened itself out. For what it's worth, Team Khan and Golden Boy have put in an official complaint of the referee. Unsubstantial IMO. Khan showed himself a classless twat at the end, and he wonders why he doesn't have many fans. Pleased for Peterson. But I wanted Khan to win so it's sort of bitter sweet.
