Here are my thoughts on the fight. Vitali at age 37 was matched vs. a younger and quicker fighter. Most aging champions struggle in this type of match up. Gomez is decent. Let us not forget that Gomez easily whipped Virichs a top ten fighter, a fighter whom Chagaev barley edged. Gomez pretty much shut out McCall. Outside of a flukish first round Ko loss to Diaz, Gomez has looked very good. Regarding Gomez chin, he did take solid shots from Virchis and McCall, so his chin can not be seen as bad. Outside of Diaz, I believe Vitali is the lone man to floor Gomez in his professional career.

Gomez is skilled, quick, and good on defense. He can easily avoid a wild rush or two, but against Vitali his task was to do that all the time, in pretty much every segment of action in every round.

Vitali took a round to warm up, but seemed to find his grove vs the slick southpaw in round two, and pretty much dominated the fight.

    Here is my scoring:

Round 1: Gomez 10-9 by small margin
Round 2: Vitali 10-9 by solid margin
Round 3: Vitali 10-9 by solid margin
Round 4: Vitali 10-9 by solid margin
Round 5: Vitali 10-9 by small margin
Round 6: Vitali and Gomez are about even 10-10
Round 7: Vitali 10-8 by big margin ( knock down with a hard right hand )
Round 8: Vitali 10-9 by big margin
Round 9: Vitali 9-8 TKO winner. ( Vitali lost a point by a questionable foul call in his own backyard ). Vitali was up by 7 points on a fair score card.

Conclusion: Vitlai’s skills, work rate and power remain. To date no man has earned more than two rounds against him in his entire career. This is amazing. Tonight Vitali out boxed, out worked and out slugged a very good boxer. Vitali went to the body some and countered well. Vitlai can still move his feet and get out of the way, and did so with ease when Gomez attacked. If Gomez were not as quick and skilled as he was, he would have been out of there inside four rounds. It was not Vitlai’s best fight, but it should rate as a solid win.

I wish most boxing judges would score fights as well as boxing hard core & fair minded fans do. Does anyone know the official score cards on this fight? I wonder if Gomez won a round in any of the three judge’s eyes, and if so which round it was.

I did not rewatch the fight but I personally gave the first round to Vitali. It was a close round.. So on my card Vitali won every round.

What fight did you watch. 6'3" 230 pounds is not fat for a heavyweight. Gomez was quick, ducked some shots, landed some solid blows, and did as well as he could. Gomez was game. He simply could not avoid all of Vitali's punches.

I guess the ring was way too small for gomez to move much. he looked chubby, no doubt.

He was fighting way above his natural weight, and despite the usual nut-hugging VITLAY looked like **** in this fight. No disgrace there, he's getting old.

Haye must have laughed his balls off watching this debacle.

I didn't think Gomez looked listless so much as he looked very concerned. He did not want to get ktfo. He fought a safe fight, and a smart fight. He frustrated Vitali, made him look sloppy. And Vitali didn't help matters with that limp jab, low right hand, and his willingness to clinch (even if Gomez was the initiator). It was a messy fight, but Vitali dominated, albeit not in a 'pretty' way.

It's a fair point about him being matched with a younger, hungrier fighter.

That's the kind of thing that would see him undone. Not this time.
