Been a lurker on this forum for a while now and just only started boxing. Maybe done around 2 weeks at the most in the gym, and most of it is bag work. Being the idiot I was, I spent the whole of the first week hitting the heavy bag aggressively without any hand wraps. Second week was painful when I started doing pad work. Each time I hit the pad, a shoot of pain would go from my hand/wrist/knuckles. It's hard to explain but it was really painful and it meant that I was not able to throw punches with power. My trainer told me to rest it. I went to a doctor, and he said it's probably just tendonitis or something like that and it will be healed if you give it time to rest. I gave it about a whole week and went back in today. Pain is starting to go away but still small signs of shooting pain when I punch hard doing an hook for example. I understand I just need to give it time to heal and that's what Il be doing. The pain has definitely started to go down but it's still not completely gone. So my questions are: 1. What hand wrap technique are you using? I am currently wrapping in between each finger - can you please post a video link of the technique you would recommend? 2. Is it okay if I use knuckle pads to protect my knuckles, and then use my standard 180 hand wraps on top of these? Or is that not a good idea? I'm really into boxing and although I understand that I need to rest - I want to get this healed ASAP so I can get back to doing what I enjoy. The pain is not gone completely... but at the same time it's going away very slowly. Not as much pain as before. Any tips to get rid of this pain completely in a quick timeframe? My trainer has said that I am doing extremely well for a beginner, and my speed/accuracy is very good. The only thing stopping me right now from progressing is the pain when punching. It can be extremely demotivating at times especially when you know that you can do much better if the pain wasn't there. Once again, thanks!
How does not using hand wraps make you an idiot? Hand wraps are purely for support. If you wrists are hurting it's either down to bad punching technique or you weak wrists.
What gloves are you using? How hard is the heavybag/ pads? 2" + inch padding on gloves should go a long way in alleviating fist pain.. Some pain when you begin is inevitable though, for some the pain never goes totally away but your hands should get used to it after a few months/years. Using proper gloves and not rockhard pads/bags and listening to your body, not overdoing it, will help the situation tremendously. On cold days in the morning you might still wake up with pain in your hands, but thats the life mate! Also when you are watching tv or whatever just do some hand exercises. Stretch it out, roll the wrists around, clench and release your fists and massage the inside of your hand to generally just loosen it up. Remember you don't need to throw 100% power punches each punch, you should vary your intensity. Also dont do heavybag 2 days in a row, throw a rest day inbetween (sparring?) and you should be fine. But like i said the gloves are really important. What are you using currently? Edit: As said by virus above, wraps wont take the pain away. It's a precautionary measure, hygienic as well. Trust me if you did your wrist you would not be punching AT ALL. Nah i think you're just experiencing the typical knuckle/hand pain that goes along with boxing. At least you punch hard enough to f.ck your hands up so thats one thing :hey Concerning the knuckle pad, it could help, you can take a strip of foam place it on your knuckle and wrap it in tight. Low budget fix for glove problem, but ultimately you should get more protective gloves!
You have to be careful wrapping between the fingers because, if you aren't good at it, you can make it difficult (impossible?) to close your fist properly. That will give you sore hands. Maybe a style where you wrap across the back of the hand and compress those bones, as opposed to spreading them, would help you more. What part of you fist are your punches landing on? If you are brand new and trying hard to punch hard, really swinging, probably you are landing on the two outside knuckles, and that hurts. Make a fist and look at it. If you have been banging shots off that small knuckle, you'll be able to tell right away. And that can and will happen with just about any size glove.
I am a complete beginner so my punches again were very sloppy most likely, hence why I should have worn hand wraps. I am an idiot because my trainer told me to use wraps but I thought I was "strong" enough not to use them.
Hey there, First of all man, thanks for the detailed response. Appreciate it. I am using these gloves, which I believe are good: (Amazon won't let me post links.. but you can Google "Authentic RDX Leather Gel Boxing Gloves Fight,Punch Bag MMA Muay thai Grappling Pad Black". As for the pads/bags, I am not sure.. Yeah, I reckon I just need to man up and start accepting these small pains and just give time for them to heal. And yep, I already work on my hands with stretches/massages whilst watching the TV. Thank you for all the advice. I was not expecting such a helpful community and I will definitely be hoping to help others out once I myself get quite into boxing. Thanks again pal.
I had a chat with my uncle today who used to box and he said the same thing. He recommended me a method of wrapping where I just wrap over the knuckles/hand more instead of between each finger. I will try that out in the next few days once my hands get a bit more rest. Thank you! As for my punches, I think most of the impact is on the middle knuckles / just under the middle knuckles (not on the actual knuckle, but just under it).
Is this what you are using? http://www.amazon.com/Authentic-RDX...t,Punch+Bag+MMA+Muay+thai+Grappling+Pad+Black http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/81h1sOpCBhL._SL1500_.jpg In product description: "Designed especially for grappling for MMA athletes" That shouldve given it away to you dude. There's your problem. You should never really use MMA gloves on the bags/pads. Even MMA fighters use 99% boxing gloves on the pads/bags cause they know whats up! For boxing you shouldnt touch that type of glove. Very little padding, very little weight, no thumb protection, wrist protection is minimal, all in all if you are looking to destroy your hands in two seconds flat, it's a good idea to use a mma glove on the heavybag. Other than that you will not get a proper workout (cause of light weight), you will not learn proper punching form, blocking/parrying and will be lost if you spar/fight with boxing gloves (which you will have to if you are going to BOX, yes they use boxing gloves when you box lol). TBH very surprised that your 'trainer' never mentioned this to you. I'm highly critical of anyone that allows a newbie to use mma gloves on a heavybag. Get yourself boxing gloves please. Something like this in 16oz is what you are looking for to get you started, you can use it on the bags/pads and sparring, it's a pretty awesome glove. http://www.amazon.com/Ringside-Styl..._sbs_sg_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=069TSTVX1PZQ61F81MGZ http://forums.sherdog.com/forums/f67/new-ringside-imf-tech-training-glove-2601827/ if you're not going to be sparring anytime soon, and just want to hit the bags and pads and want to save some cash you could go with this , I see the blue in 10oz is going for $55. This is a great glove to work on technique so being a beginner could work out well for you, very protective too. http://www.amazon.com/Ringside-IMF-Pro-Fight-Gloves/dp/B00B7MMMQ0 http://forums.sherdog.com/forums/f67/ringside-imf-pro-fight-glove-2542683/ Don't worry about the laces you can just get some elastic laces, throw out the standard laces and slip on the glove that way. No problem. I've used both gloves personally so i'm not talking out of my ass. If you can shift it I say buy both of course as ideally you want seperate gloves for bagwork and sparring so the padding in your sparring gloves stays in good condition to bounce off sparring partner's heads and not flatten them :rofl Trust me using a glove like that will be a massive improvement over mma gloves lol. cheers :good
If you are looking for a glove that you can beat the **** out of on a heavy bag, protect your hands and still stay good over the long term check this out. Theres a few pairs at the gym that has held up for yeaaars. Not for sparring though. They are heavy as **** at around 18/19 ounces great for a demanding session. http://www.amazon.com/TITLE-World-G...id=1416813964&sr=1-1&keywords=title+world+gel
This has also gotten good reviews lately, considering how little they cost. Pick up the Large/Xlarge. Also not for sparring. 10oz glove. Should be fine for a beginner. http://www.amazon.com/Ringside-FTG1-BL-WH-XL-Parent/dp/B00GTL2LTM
Year Zero: No, that is not the gloves I am using. I can clearly see they are MMA gloves so I wouldn't be that daft enough to purchase those. I really wish I can post links but I can't. Maybe I can PM you the link. I will try that now. EDIT: I cannot PM you the link but I have shortened the URL. These are the gloves I am using: amzn.to/1xTtS43 Copy and paste the above line into your URL/address bar.
You'd be surprised the amount of people i see coming into the gym using mma gloves lol. But ok that's at least one thing out of the way. Honestly I don't know much about that glove, looks of the cheap and cheerful variety and the information out there seems limited, I cant give you an opinion as I've never used it nor know anyone who's ever used it. Try some different gloves out in the gym, or pick up new ones if the pain doesnt go away, i suppose. Trust me when I say that gloves do play a big role in how much or little you hurt your hands on the bags (unless your hands are already accustomed from years of abuse). Everytime I let someone try the title world gel, or one of the ringside imf gloves out the reaction is usually something like "I can punch the bag and it doesnt hurt at all" or "i dont even feel a thing". so yeah, generally that's the sort of glove you want a beginner to use, so they cant hurt themselves.
Okay, thanks again for the reply. I will be getting some of my Uni money next week so I should have more than enough to get a new pair of gloves. Which ones do you think I should get? Please take in mind most of my training at the moment consists of PAD work, and only some little bag work (maybe once per week) but PAD work is more like 3x a week. Could you send a link to the gloves that would best suit me here for this purpose? Once again thanks for the help man, appreciate it a lot!
