Hi guys,Just wanted share my thoughts about UFC. I've noticed recently over the last few years that there is a lot less grappling and submissions and most of the fighters go into kickboxing mode with rapid ground and pound. I think this is fantastic development as I find it lot more exciting. And I'm sure the management of UFC are guiding things that way. Because the paradox of cage fighting is that some times it can be really boring watching two blokes hugging each other on the mat for five minutes. I don't want to seem like a heathen as I do appreciate good submission skills. Another thing unlike boxing, the outcome of the fight has a much greater element of chance/luck. with the small gloves it is much easier to knock people out. And when the fists are flying in all directions it can be absolute luck who connects first. From a watcher's point of view I find that there are a few problems with UFC which make me wish there were more rules. Often there is a really exciting tactical battle of fists and feet and one fighter will trip or stumble and the other will ground and pound him and the fight will be over. It's obviously exciting but I would really prefer them to continue their stand-up battle. Finally there's a lot of hype about cage fighting being "real fighting". It's quite realistic but there are still rules, no head butting, gouging biting etc, and in a real fight if you go to the ground you've normally had it as someone is likely to kick you in the head while you're wrestling with your opponent. It doesn't trouble me a bit that UFC is the only major player in cage fighting so far they seem to be playing it straight and fair. There must be a temptation to corruption, favouritism and whatnot but I've not seen any sign of that and it's a credit to them that that is the case.
Alot of people hate Dana because of his obvious flaws but he keeps things in order and doesn't let the fighters dictate how the UFC will be run. He also doesn't give in easy to contract demands or other monetary demands of fighters and agents. He keeps the best fighting the best for the most part and tries to keep it from what is happening in boxing. There has been alot of other MMA org's that have come and gone but no one has been able to match the success of the UFC, so Dana must be doing something right.
Hi Ajax, I agree I think Dana is doing a great job. and boxing is a wonderful example of what not to do. I'm not really up on the gossip why do people hate Dana? The guy has obviously overcome being saddled with a girl's name so surely he deserves sympathy.
The only problem I have with the UFC are wrestlers, they are the most dominant discipline in the cage and they dictate where the fight goes which sometimes can lead into a very boring spectacle. I wouldnt mind two JJ guys rolling ala Diego/Nick Diaz. But stalling and laying wont do the sport good in the long run. For now it is what it is and eventually the sport will reconcile this minor "flaw" by guys developing great takedown defense. And I agree the UFC is not Martial Arts, its a sport competition. Martial Art is whats happening in the middle east now, its war, real life with no rules
In a sense...I think Dana White is very similar to Vince McMahon. The people who have him (UFC fans) hate him but everybody else (boxing fans, other MMA promotions) would KILL to have him. He's undervalued by the fans of the UFC mainly because he makes a prickish/shrewd moves that can make your blood boil. That said if he didn't do it, someone else would so give him credit for being proactive.
And yet he is the only one in his "profession" to do his job, nobody else can run an MMA company like Dana.
Tell you what, if UFC is paying people to big them up on fight forums that is marketing genius on a whole new level.chimba I agree with what you say good comment about the martial arts and war. One thing though, I am from England just check out the latest ticket prices for the next one here £50 for the cheapest seats can you believe that. That is taking the ****.
