As long as you keep sharp, the ring rust is not a problem. However, if all your income depends on boxing and let's face it, Beterbiev isn't making solid money YET, then you can run into financial difficulties.

To be honest, he should develop a more aggressive personality and start trolling Canelo and call him out. It's what boxing WANTS to see. I have no interest in a 3rd Golovkin fight, or even a BJS fight now. We should all be more vocal about this too; Canelo has peaked now too and Beterbiev has just entered his peak too so it makes sense.

The Meng fight was a formality. Barely anyone knew about it and it was so poorly promoted, I doubt anyone even knows it has been called off.

Beterbiev vs Canelo is what the boxing fans deserve after the Corona virus drought.

The two best 175lb'rs got in the ring to see who was the best, unfortunately for Gvozdyk he was shown to be no2. I think he fought to the best of his ability against a beast and if they fought again i'd expect Beterbiev to come out on top again. Hes simply h2h a better fighter. His strength would always show down the stretch with him

Theres the match up. Kov of the Cleverley fight or just after, hungry still, v Beterbiev of the Gvozdyk fight. Kov imo could long range him with comfort, he has legs too, but he never fought a AB, the natural strength could come in to play again if Kov isn't at a distance. I got Kov pts

I know size matters & it's never going to happen but damn I'd have loved Gassiev v Beterbiev.. though AB is naturally smaller he just has that physicality & freakish strength & a bulked up version would be very interesting..

What I saw in the first 3 rounds motivated me to reach over for my cellphone, open Betway and drop a wager on a Beterbiev stoppage (still good value at 31/20), but the harbingers in the 1st should have been enough.

They had a good fight, but there was a superficiality to the competitiveness, as Gvozdyk never really looked comfortable in there. It was the collegiate being consumed by the neanderthal, which isn't to suggest that Beterbiev clubbed away without savvy – on the contrary, while Gvozdyk could appear to be the classier operator in a cursory aesthetic comparison, Beterbiev is the more intuitive fighter of the two, has more variety and nous to his game in addition to the freakish strength and authentic mean streak.

It's hard to see how Gvozdyk could have won. His boxing evidently wasn't enough. As for signs of how a gung-ho approach might have served him, when he did open up on Beterbiev, Beterbiev alternated between playing it relatively cute and bulldozing through the punches while replying with his own (which visibly unnerved Gvozdyk).

Did he lose because there's just no answer to Beterbiev? An answer may not lie among the current crop, but I don't think Artur is unbeatable.

I was never sold on Gvozdyk, and my scepticism wasn't allayed by his labouring win over a limited Stevenson. If I were a supporter, I'd have been hoping for a performance which showed he had the nuances, that he was more than just a fresher boxer/athlete pushing aside last year's model of boxer/athlete (never known for great stamina) in the late rounds. (I still believe that a prime Kovalev, for instance, would have deconstructed Adonis Stevenson inside 8 rounds tops, on account of the skill disparity, with Stevenson possessing only a puncher's chance.) Gvozdyk's shortcomings put me in mind of a Lucian Bute, although he's a much more durable specimen – a talented guy who lacks dimensions and guile, continues to display traits of amateurishness long after he removes the headguard and vest, with wasteful and repetitive movement and an invariably prodding jab. I'd like to see a guy with Gvozdyk's physical attributes do much less hopping around and more staking his claim to the real estate behind an authoritative jab. But you can't remodel a guy in his 30's any more than you can afford to be guileless against a guy like Beterbiev.

We don't know if his spirit is altogether broken, but it was definitely compromised on that night – stopping for no apparent reason in the 9th, more than just one of those amateur hangovers (as exhibited in the 11th round of the Stevenson bout, even as the momentum was favoring him), was a telltale sign that whatever enthusiasm he'd had for the fight had largely drained from him. He made an intellectual decision, moreso than a visceral one, to keep getting up and throwing, accepting Atas' motivational screeds and rationalizing to himself that one has to abide distress in order to win, but the experience may leave him with a weaker will for future encounters.

Remember all the talk beforehand about Gvozdyk's supposed glass chin? His detractors assumed oh he gotta be packing glass up top because he's a pretty boy but once again they got it wrong just like CST and I told them all they would.

Gvozdyk won his world title of a fighter who was unquestionably one of the top 5 most savage punchers in the game and arguably the #1 in terms of lights out single shot HL reel fashion KO power and then he jumped right into a unification match up in just his second defence against another top 5 ranked most savage puncher in the game, a fighter who doesn't just sport the highest KO% in the game, an immaculate 100%, but who amassed much of it against a bunch of fighters who had never previously been dropped or stopped before.

Gvozdyk won his world title of the absolutely savage punching Adonis and over in the later's backyard too

Makes his second defence against the absolutely savage punching Beterbiev

Just think about that for a second

Allow me to add a little perspective

Roid managed to navigate his way through his entire steroid enhanced prime without going within a 1000 mile radius of a legit banger, let alone murderous punching ones like Adonis and Artur both of whom can punch holes in castle walls. And trust me if either of those savage hitters detonated one of their bombs on Roid's hideous old lady glass mandible not only would shards of his glass be found on every continent on planet Earth but they'd lay him out cold on his back for a fortnight.

Re. Beterbiev's KO% and savage power

Only 3 of his opponents have made it past 5 rounds. The fact that Gvozdyk managed to last as long as he did and for those of you who weren't paying close enough attention, was able to withstand as many brutally heavy bombs as he did, and eat plenty from Adonis too, is resounding proof he has a sturdy mandible

KO 5 Hot Rod - never been dropped (legit KD) or stopped
KO 4 Callum Johnson - never been dropped or stopped
KO 12 Enrico Koelling - never been (AFAIA) dropped or stopped
TKO 1 Isrado Prieto - never been stopped, down once before albeit it was questionable
TKO 4 Ezequiel Maderna - had never been stopped
TKO7 Alexander Johnson - never been stopped
    KO 4 Gabriel Campillo
KO2 Jeff Page Jr - had never been stopped (been stopped since though)
KO 2 Tavouris Cloud - had never been off his feet, stopped once on a corner retirement in round 7 by Adonis Stevenson
    TKO 1 Alvaro Enriquez
    TKO 4 Gabriel Lecrosnier
    KO 1 Bill Bailey
RTD 3 Rayco Saunders - had only been stopped once in 45 fights
    TKO 2 Christian Cruz

Here's some quotes from some of Beterbiev's opponents, sparring partners, and members of his team etc regarding his power

    Bob Ajisafe

'He's very strong, very tough. Hits very hard with a lot of power. I think he's definitely going to be one to watch in the division. I don't think there's many who could last with him.''

What is it about Beterbiev that makes him so good?

''It's his power. I mean sometimes you box with him or out box him but sooner or later he's going to catch you with one of those big shots and he's just got so much power for a light-heavyweight.''

    Blake Caparello

Beterbiev has sparred recently with Bob Ajisafe and Blake Caparello, who believes Campillo (25-6-1, 12 KO) is in for a brief outing. "I really think it will be a short night for Campillo," Caparello said. "This guy has some incredible brute force. He could even chase and hunt down a strong Sergey Kovalev in the ring''

“I do believe experiences like this will help me grow not only as a fighter but also my reputation,” said Caparello in closing. “Artur Beterbiev has a good reputation as being a beast and not many sparring partners can go with him''

    Oleksandr Usyk

Q: Oleksandr, you won most everything as an amateur, including the gold at the 2012 Olympics. Who would you say gave you your hardest fight as an amateur?

Oleksandr Usyk: “Well, all those fights, they all took place within the last couple of years or so, so it’s hard to say. Maybe, if I was pushed to say, it was Artur Beterbiev of Russia who gave me my roughest fight. He is very aggressive and he does hit very hard.”

Gabriel Campillo on both Kovalev and Beterbiev

Almost a year after Campillo’s scandalous loss to Tavoris Cloud in February of 2012, ‘Chico Guapo’ stepped into the ring with then rising danger man Sergey Kovalev, now recognised as one of the best fighters in the sport. In hindsight a third round loss to the Russian was no disgrace at all and Campillo believes that Kovalev would have a good chance at defeating Ward should that bout come to fruition.

“Kovalev can beat anyone put in front of him but he is not unbeatable. He can beat Ward, it’s a fight we all want to see but I don’t have a clear favourite as yet. Maybe the amount of time Ward has been out and not fighting boxers of this quality could cost him. If I were his manager I might look to avoid that fight! As a boxer he will look to fight him, so there’s a conflict there.''

“Kovalev is in his prime and we don’t know how long that will last but there is also Artur Beterbiev who is very strong, for sure he was the hardest puncher that I fought. I would favour Kovalev in that fight but anything can happen with a strong guy like Beterbiev.”

Someone posted this on another forum

''I've heard scary stuff about this guy from behind gym doors, including a high HIGH praise and a glowing endorsement from Ovill Mckenzie who has been in his camps, said he will win world title within 10 fights without question''

    Jean Pascal

Pascal is convinced that despite Beterbiev's short experience as a pro, he will be ready for Tavoris Cloud.

Pascal: ''Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if he knocks Cloud out.''

Artur Beterbiev is renowned for his power, as Pascal confirms.

Pascal: ''Artur is a brute, I remember the first time we sparred, he hit me so hard my neck hurt for a week. He's a very big puncher, he's very strong physically but he's also very smart.''

    Russ Anber

I posed this question to Russ Anber, a trainer who helps Marc Ramsay with Beterbiev, and has worked in the corners of Sergio Martinez, Roy Jones Jr., and Jean Pascal. He drew on his 36 years in the boxing biz, and was straightforward with his appraisal of the Russian, a two-time Olympian.

"Beterbiev is almost too good to be true," Anber told me of the fighter, who resides with his wife and kids in Montreal. "Technically, he's a complete student of the game, old school. He's university educated, understands biomechanics. His style is strength, imposition, but he's complete. He's as strong as a heavyweight, spars heavyweights here, like Oscar Rivas. He's the kind of guy, he comes into the gym, he doesn't turn the music on, he turns it off. He goes to the body, his infighting is good. And he's beaten Sergey Kovalev in the amateurs twice!"

"This is the most complete boxer I've seen up close," Anber continued. "It's an effin privilege to be with him. His mental approach is that of a spartan. And I mean, he's the sort of guy you'd want your daughter to bring home. It's almost too good to be true."

    Yvon Michel:

How impressed are you with the rapid progress of Artur Beterbiev?

Look, he is really impressive in every aspect of what you dream of for a fighter. He has a personality; he is an intelligent person, he’s a family man. He has strength, power, speed, technique and dedication. The only thing that is missing is experience and we’re working on it. It’s a huge step (facing Cloud), we understand that, but we’ve seen him spar, I’ve had reports from his strength and conditioning coach, his trainer Marc Ramsey, who trains a lot of high performance fighter. Everything is telling me that we have an exceptional fighter on our hands

Beterbiev's strength and condition coach (Andre Kulesza):

One last word that Andre Kulesza. This guy was coach with the greatest athletes in the world. Including Lucian Bute, a beast of training.

"Phfff, it does not compare. That's what I've seen stronger in my life. It is measured scientifically. The recovery time, strength, relaxation. Artur Beterbiev is in a class by itself. "

    Mark Ramsey

“No matter if the fight is short or long, Artur will fight like hell in every round, promised Marc Ramsay, Beterbiev’s trainer. I know that a lot of boxing fans in Canada are worried to see Beterbiev, who has only five pro bouts, face one of the biggest name on the international scene. But not me. I am working every day in the gym with Artur. I know how much this fighter is great and mature. Andre Kulesha, our physical education’s specialist, told me he never worked with a fighter stronger and resistant like Artur. Cloud has no idea how much Berterbiev is good, strong physically and resistant. Trust me, Artur has the stamina to attack from the first to the 12 rounds if it's necessary.''

Not even Ward agrees with you mate. I saw an interview a while back in which he said him vs Calzaghe would be a close SD type affair. Wards never faced a fighter who'd have him thinking like Calzaghe would. That type of work rate & angles.. go watch the Kessler fight, Kessler only won 2 rounds (4 & 12) & was completely outclassed for 90% of it.. whereas Ward groped him to death & nutted him constantly even though he had vision issues..
